Can someone please tell me exactly what a verbal commitment from a D3 school means.

    Thank you.

BTW, I just moved to the area and heard that this forum is a good place to get information........JK :)

As I understand it, a verbal commitment to a d3 school is nothing more than what it sounds like: the student tells the d3 coach that he will be attending their school assuming they are accepted. In some cases, the coach will tell the student that they are guaranteed a place on the roster for 1 year.

But I am sure a d3 verbal commitment can mean much more or much less depending on the coach and/or player. There is nothing binding in a d3 verbal commitment. Nothing. Nor are there any ramifications for either party if that commitment is broken.

Technically there are no ramifications if an agreement is broken. But a coach can quickly develop a poor reputation if he does it more than a few times. The other catch is coaches push for players to apply ED, which is binding to the school if the player is accepted.

Exactly! This is why a commitment to a D3 can mean a lot. Incidentally, at many schools, the "binding" part of ED is still contingent on the awarding of an adequate financial package.

So what exactly is the D3 coach promising as his part of the verbal commitment? Particularly in tough academic leagues like the UAA and the NESCAC.

Typically, by the time athletes commit publicly to a D3 school, they have already been admitted through the ED, EA, or regular admission process. So, at that point, the player is generally considered as a "recruited" player and is less likely to be cut after preseason. Players who indicate their commitment prior to being admitted are basically saying that they will attend the D3 school if they are admitted. Players are unlikely to voice such a commitment unless they have been assured of some level of assistance or encouragement in the admissions process (like a "tip," for example). Because players usually don't announce their commitment to a D3 school until after they have been offered admission, there don't tend to be many such announcements until after ED, EA, and regular admission acceptances have been made.

This does not seem like accurate information. Kids are claiming D3 commitments already. ED applications were just due. Are acceptances really out?

It means they got a positive pre-read from admissions . NESCACs tend to do these starting in spring of junior year, but the coaches have likely asked all those questions well before that. They know how low Admissions will go and whether they'll need to use a slot or tip on the kid.

Please note the words "typically" and "usually." D3 commitments will explode once offers of admission have been made.

OP here. That has been tried several times and failed. I coach boys so I don't do a girl's list. There are multiple sites I collect from, but this is the best:
