The only way he would have known is if the coach sat him down and told him he wasn't in their future plans.

Plenty of kids aren't on squads by sophomore year for just that reason. Most will get some token minutes in noncompetitive games so a coach can see them in game action. I suspect more kids are cut after freshman year than we will ever know. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. Even worse if you're cut later - much harder to transfer and the likelihood of getting a roster spot at another school goes down each year.

While I understand the reaction, here are the challenges this presents;
The kid likely had good athletic $$ to a fine local school. Having committed about 6 months ago, he was off most other coaches radar. It is now late in the 2016 recruiting cycle, and most of the $$ are gone and D1 coaches are shopping for depth players. Coaches will know the situation is desperate and will see a bargain. I see the kid is LA. If I were that family I would consider a PG year somewhere, although maybe he already is in a fifth year. Gl to him.

Or maybe they don't care about any of that and just want to find a more stable place to play with a good education. I know I wouldn't want my kid signing on to an unstable situation and not even knowing who the coaching staff will be. NU may have this issue with other recruits as well. On the boys side not everything is "locked up" like it can be on the girls side. There's always some last minute things happening - instances like this, players not getting admitted to their schools, or players changing their mind. Nothing is set in stone until admittances are set and NLI's are signed

I doubt there is much soccer money. Most average d1 mens soccer programs have very little athletic money if any. Better aid for need and merit.

I know I'd be strongly encouraging my kid to work the phones if he had been involved with NU.

unless you are a superstar or foreign recruit there is little money for most at NU. For those with $$, it makes sense to stay if you can get a verbal committment prior to the NLIfrom the AD that your money is guaranteed. Good school to extra $$, the new coach is coming in too late to do a ton of recruiting. Those kids on the bubble who have been offered a spot by BA just to get them in the door might have a hard time staying on the team with a new coach in place
