Why isn't FC Bayern covering the cost of the trip for the kids? Anybody can take a group of players over and "train" with teams if they want to pay for it.

I like GPS and affiliating with Bayern is good, however, I question the value in sending kids to Germany for a week. It would be exciting and 'cool' for the kids, but how much do you get out of 8 days? With regard to soccer, I would prefer to have their coaches come to the US and train the kids for a year. With regard to seeing Germany, then 8 days would be a good start.....but the kids will presumably playing soccer instead of site-seeing. Couple this with the cost and you have to ask whether or not it is worth the trip.

The relationship with GPS is to get American parents money. GPS is paying Bayern a crap load of money in hopes that more American players buy into GPS program. It is a marketing scam. If you listen to the Bayern talk at the NSCAA convention with Paul Breitner you would see right through this relationship. The German speaker was cold, arrogant and did not say one thing that would help American kids. It was bragging about how Bayern has increased size and money to be able train German players for free. Did not mention one thing about how to develop players except for to win. Until Americas realize that the pay to play model will not get the best players we will always be behind the 8 ball when it comes to soccer. We need to follow the develop and sell model that every other country that plays football does.
I was stationed in Germany for 4 years. German kids this age train 5 days a week and play on Fridays. They train twice a day for about 2 hours. The German coaches will not tolerate the lazy minded American kids. German coaches are very structured in their training and their comments are very direct and to the point.

Ironic on how we are turning to the Germans now and previously it was the English.
As long as America tries to rent/partner a footballing culture from other countries we are destined to be a third class footballing nation. We need to develop or own culture

1) Will the Bayern training change the skill level of your kid in this short of a timeframe? No.
2) Will your kid somehow be "discovered" as a world class talent who will be playing someday for Bayern? Uh...no.
3) Will the Bayern trip possibly attract more folks to GPS? Yes.
4) Will the Bayern trip make GPS teams more competitive vs. other local clubs? maybe - only if they pull in some talented lemmings.
5) Will the Bayern trip inspire your kid to greater dedication and love for the sport? Probably.
It sounds like a great experience for a kid who loves soccer, but I'd be careful not to expect it to mean much to his or her career trajectory.
