The way you combat that is by doing what this parent did by starting early and easing their daughter into the process.
Are you saying that some player with D1 ability slip to D3 because they are late to the process?

Not the OP but absolutely that can and does happen.

Not really because if they have true D1 ability it gets snapped up even though the kid may be slow to react because some coach ends up looking at them as a steal. It is the marginal D1 D2 talents that fall to D3 when they double clutch.

Wow, they must be all-conference in D3 if they could have played D1.

That seems a little different than what the other poster was saying. Won't the coaches just move on to another player? Won't all the D1 money and placements be gone? What will be left? To be a walk on at a third rate D1 school?

Keep praying. If your kid is destined to get money that will pop up well before they drop all the way down to D3.

Now I'm really confused. So, if you are good enough to get money then you do not need to start early? But other posters say the spots at the good schools fill up quickly.

Sometimes you can get lucky - say a player a coach was crazy about decides not to take an offer, etc. and you contact them at the right time. But yes dollars and positions on a team are available for a finite time period, especially at top programs. Plenty of players are willing to do whatever to get on a squad and that's what a coach wants to see, not someone who is late to the ball.

Sure ain't like a kid with top 20 level talent is going to fall all the way to Amherst. Might a marginal D1 talent drop down, sure, but it comes across like you think D1 talents are a dime a dozen and none of them have any clue what they want. The op is kidding themselves if they think that in this environment where college recruiting is such a focal point of all of the clubs that a large number of kids get well into their junior year without having a clue. If a kid is going to drop the ones that do typically are the bottom of the roster lower level D1 that didn't have a whole lot of interest.

You start early so you don't end up at some NESCAC school with your dad telling everyone you are really a d1 talent who chose academics over soccer trying to cover that you screwed up and didn't manage your recruiting process well enough.

There is a waterfall effect to recruiting in the sense that a bottom of the roster player at one level becomes a top of the roster player at the next but it doesn't really mean that players keep falling though. Smart coaches go find what is a group of top of the roster players for their level and work them until they fill their quota. If a kid can't make up their mind they don't keep dropping down talent levels they just go to the next kid in that group of players they were looking at.

How did this thread about how many colleges to email devolve into the usual D1 vs D3 nonsense, NESCAC sucks, if you have real talent D1 coaches will find you and throw money at you, etc, etc?

Can nobody on this site have a decent debate about college and the process...

No because we have to endure a constant stream of bs from the D3 crowd. There is no "real" recruiting at that level but yet for some reason those parents feel compelled to make all of these recruiting discussions about the academic decisions they made. It is especially nauseating when they keep trying to ascert that their kids are every bit as good as a D1 scholarship athlete only smarter. It is like that crowd has one big insecurity complex.

                                Thanks, BTDT.
