Wheaton does seem to be struggling lately. Did not make the NCAA's last year for the first time in many years. Will not get an at large bid this year, only way in will be to win the NEWMAC.

First thing that comes to mind, is the number of good coaches that get out and recruit, has increased the past 5 years. He's not the only one working their butts off, at recruiting. There are more full time D3 jobs, and a lot more security, and good coaches with families are staying for more than 3 years, and not leaving for a D1 asst job. The second is cost of the school, coming in around $65,000 is not a help. They have to recruit around the nation to get the parents who can afford Wheaton. I've also heard they don't hand out the endowment money like the used to. Looking for full pay kids at that price!! Good luck! Lastly, I think the act has warn thin, and he needs a change. I wouldn't be surprised if he moved on soon. He is a good coach, with a work ethic like no other. I think the change of scenery for him, would be good for him and the program. I think he knows that, and that's why he has been on the short list when a few of these local jobs open up. I don't want to take anything away from WPI, they have improved the past 3 years under the new skipper. They play organized and with a purpose on both sides. Lets not forget, that Wheaton Women was the tide, that rose all boats in the NEWMAC.

WPI may have just improved. They tied MIT as well who has been a power in that conference lately.

I definitely agree that other programs have caught up. There are more players, therefore more quality players, therefore more quality players that choose DIII. I will say although Wheaton does not meet full EFC, they do offer both need based and merit FA. So if you are paying full price it is because you can afford it and the school may have been a reach for your kid.

I have seen Wheaton play several times over the last few years. What I have noticed lately is that although they do not lack individual talent, something seems "off". Wheaton always seemed to get the job done but now has trouble as their record reflects. Not sure if it is a coaching problem, leadership, or personalities.

They made the NCAA's 13 years in a row. That is impressive and extremely difficult. Now they are struggling. It happens. Others will rise.
