There are 5 star bball recruits changing their minds right at this moment based on where some other 5 star recruits have committed and/or whether certain players are returning or entering the draft. The point is that there is nothing profound to dig up here.
Could be any number of reasons as you said. But if it was academics (as suspected) then it flies in the face of those who say schools will forgive weak academic performance for a stud player. Hopefully his final choice is the best fit for him academically and socially first, soccer a distant second.

No, it doesn't fly in the face of anything. The fact that one school might not take a kid doesn't mean that soccer doesn't help a kid get admitted to other schools. Nor does it mean that a school wouldn't take a player with even lower credentials if they are even better athletically than another kid. And you still haven't explained your concern or interest.

OP here - I'm not the one who does seem inordinately interested in that particular player. I was just making a comment. And btw I did say I hope it's a good fit for him - as I do every other player on the list

And why are you so defensive? You seem to think this is only about one kid. It’s not. Contrary to what your obvious paranoia would have you believe, some of us follow this thread (and those from previous years) because we have kids starting their college search and we hope to learn from those who have gone before us. This year it’s a kid who thought he was going to Harvard and he’s not. Last year it was a kid who thought he was going to play soccer at Northeastern and it didn’t happen. Different kids, different stories, different schools. However, it is two local Division 1 programs and two local coaches who did not deliver on promises. Without an understanding of what went wrong, it’s hard to draw conclusions. Were these kids misled or were their expectations out of line? And what does it say about the coaches? If I had a kid who was looking to play soccer at either Harvard or Northeastern in the next couple years, I’d have a few questions.

I smell someone with a grudge! How would you know what the coaches promised or did not promise (unless you are related to one of the players)?

D1 soccer is not U10 Town Soccer. No one is guaranteed ANYTHING. If you cannot deal with that, then don't get involved. What happens at NU or Harvard is no different than any other D1 program or top D3 program.

Only in the case of the NU player he had a spot, was admitted to the school, was on the roster, trained in August with the team THEN was cut just when school started. Very different than a player being told "there's a spot for you as long as you get admitted." Many schools will give some leeway for athletes but most will not go below a certain threshold. I've been told the 2015 player was quite open with his teammates that his scores weren't the greatest.

Or he may have just changed his mind (liked Dartmouth better) or Dartmouth gave him a better aid package. Who knows. Net/net there's always change ups and nothing is set in stone. Even if your kid gets in and is on the team he might not be the next year. He could burn out, not perform and get cut, get no PT no matter how hard he works and quits (or transfers). Plenty of players have no issues but it happens often enough you have to go in knowing it could change

In the NU case. The player approached the coaching staff about attending the school. He wasn't recruited or offered a spot on the team. This happens all the time on the "commits" list on this site.

So how would he train with the team and be on the roster (as other poster said) if he wasn't a true team member? The whole process is a bit used-car salesman like. Seems very little is ever set in stone.

signed - just starting the process with oldest kid and finding it overwhelming

There is nothing sexy here to figure out.

Schools change their minds. Kids change their minds. Some walk-on. Some don't show up in shape. Some "commit" based on a coach's support but then don't through admissions. Bottom line is that it is hard to play in college, even at many D3s. There are D3s who bring in 12 kids and maybe only 7 are still on the roster the next year and even fewer might actually be playing.

Just read the last few pages but wasn't sure if this was said or not. Was he not accepted or decided Dartmouth was better fit? Either way great stuff!

Anybody have a list for all the kids listed of where they applied, where they got accepted or rejected, and how much if any they were awarded? If any of them have any medical conditions that you know about please list those also.

Heard he turned down pro contract w/ Revs for Dartmouth.
