When one looks at this commitments list for D1 players, it is not really the same as considering them to be "recruits" the way BTDT is discussing it in the other thread.

First, there is much less scholarship money in men's soccer than in women's soccer.

Second, most of the awards are for partial scholarships.

Third, for some of these kids they may have been "recruited" for back of hte roster slots

OP here. Agreed that around 50% of the D1's are depth players. That should be considered as the family plans what to do. Often kids want the accolade that comes from being a "D1 recruit" not considering what practicing hard and sitting on the bench four years might be like. Up to then they were stars wherever they were. The depth player in D1/player on a D3 team is an important issue to decide. Of course the most important is what school is best. BTW, a 50% scholarship at a $60K a year school isn't chicken feed. I would estimate that about 10 of the thousands of boys playing get such a figure.

And I bet a lot of people getting recruited a back of the roster spot are told by the coach they'll come in and fight for minutes or play more than they actually do.

Nice to see the last kid on the list persevere and get playing time on a top program.

Is it fair to say that this class is one of the smaller in terms of total players still playing by junior year? If I recall correctly, coming into college, this was one of the larger D1 classes.

great list and good to see. Note that Swartz at NU has started most all games since freshman year and is a junior captain, but has been injured much of this year so far. Otherwise a consistent starter

Why exactly do you find these numbers sobering? It's hard work, it's a huge commitment, and not starting does not mean that the overall experience is bad. It's called life.

Exactly. These kids are beating the odds, whether they start or not and most of them love it and will never forget those years

Nearly all of the kids plus their families who were cut or quit regarded their experience negatively IMO.

It's sobering because many parents and players have very unrealistic expectations of college sports. They're used to be their team studs. Even just looking at those numbers as a high school player it brings to light what a harsh situation it is. They may not change their goals of playing in college but maybe they at least go in with a more realistic set of expectations. Having the right attitude can help smooth the bumps in the road (because there will be many).

It also reinforces the adage that you better really like the school first and foremost because they likelihood of starting and playing all four years is not great.
