Everyone comes with a different package, sports, arts, music. Not everyone is a great student. For some, the sports is the carrot all these years, for others it helps them focus and is another set of eyes on their academic and private lives. For those good students, soccer is the gravy that completes the package. We all hear and repeat the mantra "it takes a village to raise a child". Why can't these soccer teams/coaches be part of that village. I know that my son's coach(es) discuss grades and academics all the time. Contrary to what you might believe, the coaches care about these kids. I think it is hard to spend 3 years 5 days a week 10 months a year with them and not be vested in them.

Athletics oversight asks coaches to pay attention to the academic side of their students 'experience'. Some are good about it, some pay lip service to it. One thing I'm sure of - the athletes parents know little, and love to believe the rosiest scenarios amongst all that they hear. As is well known, you won't eat sausage after a visit to the factory.

One clarification. If anything, soccer helps most kids access a better school. Those who also criticize on this score have it wrong too. Kids and parents aren't choosing and staying with soccer solely so they can access a better school. That is to confuse cause and effect. Any kid who is not driven by a pretty significant love of the game and internal motivation to play won't be able to "make it" and take advantage of an admissions boost. But if they do have those attributes then a bit of help with college admissions may be an effect of their love of the game and hard work.

The idea that soccer helps kids access a better is one of those rosy scenarios. Most of the time, a college recruitment - if it happens - overcomes the lower GPA and other credentials due to the focus on the sport required to get that dispensation. And when a kid gets into a school that he's not prepared for, and continues with a hefty load of practices and games, the only option is to head for the easiest course of study and just get by. This is what happens to most soccer players at most good schools

So you would prefer that a kid not use what he/she could to get into a better school? It is also possible that an under-achiever in high school will figure it out if they are allowed to get one foot into the door of a better school.
This is where many colleges are changing and having dedicated persons/tutors/teachers to help get the athletes by when necessary. Most schools that we have visited require a minimum of 3.0 GPA before becoming more independent academically. There are schools that are trying (or at least appearing to do so) to be responsible to their student athletes.

The warnings about the difficulties of "making it," at all the various levels, and about the stresses of actually participating in college are warranted up to a point, but there is an overkill and disparagement of kids and their parents, clubs, colleges, etc that betrays some deeply seated issues and self-loathing for those who persist with the type of posts you responded to. If anyone dares suggest that he or she is having a good experience, then like clockwork the disparagements come in. Either the level isn't good enough, or it's D1 but not a top D1, or it's a semi-elite school but not an Ivy, or it's an Ivy but not one of the best athletic D1s, or it's closer to full price than full ride, or the kid made the roster but isn't getting major minutes, etc, etc. The impulse to ***** the air out of anyone who suggests they might have a balloon apparently is just too tempting to resist.

Let the Debbie downers try to tell you that your kid can't possibly have a positive college recruitment experience or become a contented student athlete. Something is always
wanting with them and assume (hope?) the same of everyone else. I'd pity them more if they weren't so vehement and venomous in their tirades.
