Without getting into too many details here as to the "why's" of how I find myself in this situation... Is it possible to make a top team without trying out for a spot during tryout week(s)? I'll add the caveot that this is not at a top club - age u12. Will most coaches be receptive to a phone call like this after the fact? Knowing the team fairly well... I would say the player would be a fairly safe bet of making the team if he had attended the tryout.

In many cases, teams leave themselves flexibility for this situation. If they don't know your child, they would advise that you bring him to training, which could be September, and decide then whether to offer a spot. If the coach has summer camps, that could also be a time to evaluate your child. Worst case, your child only misses the fall, still plays town or school, and can join the club for winter training, if it offer that. It's not the end of the world to miss spring tryouts.Comment

Tryouts are not typically the best place to get on a team if it is at least a decent team. See if you can join training either before tryouts or afterwards as they would likely welcome him to join.
