Perhaps I can help. My child has been to several of these. The first one will be the most anxiety provoking because it is new and unknown for both of you. Be prepared, once you get there, your child will likely be alone and their anxiety will shoot through the roof because your child will recognize a lot of older, well known, players milling around with them. They typically have a good number of high regional and national prospects cycle through these events to update their evaluations on them. Prepare your child to fight against their self doubt but you need to tell them that they would not be asked to attend if they were not good. That is the god's honest truth. Also, your child should be prepared, they don't separate by age groups, they mix them together. This can be real tough on the younger players.Originally posted by Unregistered View Post
These things are actually fairly sterile. The kids show up and stand around for it seem like forever. Then someone will call the players into a huddle while another coach comes over to sidelines and tells the parents to leave. After the players warm up with a series of drills they do a number of small sided games then play full sided. That is basically the schedule for the whole event usually. There is not a lot of fanfare OR a lot of information given during the whole process. It will likely drive you, the parent out of your mind, because they never give any feedback what so ever. You will leave there not knowing how well your child did or if they have the slightest chance of ever being asked back for another one. Unless you club coach is extremely well wired in, they will even have a hard time finding this information out. Be prepared for this.
There is definitely a method to their madness. They are trying to get evaluations on new players and update ones on older players. There is no best or worst only what the national evaluators are looking for. You either fit their profile or you don't. You can't lose any sleep over it.Comment

Honestly, what it says is the kid is probably pretty good and already on the radar screen. That is where we are at in youth soccer these days. The machine extends all the way down into the U-Tiny levels. It is pretty obnoxious to crap on a kid who is on the leading edge of her age group. What's the harm? The girl gets to go play free soccer in front of some influential coaches. It's merely one step in a very long processor trying to find soccer talent in the US. It's not the end of the process and they certainly aren't restricting their search to 10 year olds by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure you have devised a much better system of trying to find the best two dozen female soccer players out of the tens of millions in this country that play the game.
