If you are talking about town travel during the middle school years, do both. If this is an actual middle school team, do miaa rules apply? Are they enforced if so?

There was no arrogant attitude other than yours. My daughter asked the coach before try outs if what she wanted to do would work for him. It was his decision to let her play or not and to be OK with her conflicts. Fortunately he wasn't a jerk like you because he knows it's only middle school soccer and done mostly for fun.

MIAA rules should only apply to varsity teams, and practically, they do. But there are no doubt some JV, frosh and middle school coaches and administrators who cite MIAA rules to justify penalizing and excluding kids from activities.

Way to defend yourself and calling this jerk out--where do these people come from? 12 out of the 17 players on our team play club soccer including both coaches sons---I think this is more of the rule than the exception. We have more conflicts with other sports than club soccer.

OP here-thanks for all of the responses. Town travel is an option as well, I didn't list it b/c i thought middle school would be a better option-maybe town travel and club would be the solution, I know they are fine with missing 1 practice per week for club practice.

Thanks especially for the advice about not taking a year off from club-that was really the decision I needed to make. The other stuff can fall into place as things come along. Will try to get a feel for the middle school team and coach.

Most Middle School Coahes are just teachers and thanks for volunterring, but they are not going to give you what club soccer will give your child. My sons grades did not suffer while playing both. You should be able to find a balance, but if your child is serious about soccer don't....I repeat don't skip a year of club. If I had to chose I would chose club over a middle school team.

              Good Luck~
You would chose? If you had to chose? Um, what about what your kid wants. I thought the prior poster said her middle school child wanted to play for her school. Good for you mom, letting her make her own choices and do both.

No she would ultimately choose, relax, but I lay out the options. In other words, I get veto power if I feel that what she is choosing is too much of a commitment. She tends to over commit herself, I definitely don't do it for her. We have three other children so schedules for everyone get taken into account. I meant I need to decide if I am going to allow club to be an option for her during first year of middle school-that's what the thread was about. I am worried it may be too much of a commitment with school and all, and I know she also wants to try out for the middle school team. We have already had a discussion about middle school team vs town travel, but maybe that should be revisited in light of what people here have posted.

But yes, she chooses her activities. She just wants to do everything and I have to pull her back! I can only do so much driving/ carpooling!

Also, someone mentioned MIAA rules? This middle schooler is my oldest child so I am not familiar with those?

Basically, the rule states that the school sport shall come first and the player cannot miss the school practice or game for any other sport. Its the dedicated team rule. If there is a violation then the player and possibly team could be penalized. Someone mentioned that this applies only to varsity. I do not know the specifics about that but i'm sure if you chose to do the research, you could find the answer easily enough.

It is a high school varsity rule. Does not apply in middle school

Even if it applied, it should be ignored in most cases. The consequence is miss 1/4 of the school team's games. Until your junior or senior years, a good club situation is contributing more than a few school games. Even more so in the spring, when playing club soccer and a spring sport at school. If soccer's your real interest, don't worry about the penalty of missing a few baseball, tennis or track games. An exception would be if your school soccer is a championship contender, and you are a key player.
