That's a distorted view of Memorial Day. It was started to commemorate the Northern soldiers who died in the Civil War and war n broadened to commemorate all those who died while serving in the armed forces, which covers the Revolutionary War to the present. A lot of the soldiers who died were not fighting totaliitarian regimes with designs to take over the world. If the Brits had won the Revolutionary War, we'd probably have more kids running around playing soccer and our liberties would probably be no more shackled than Canada and Australia. On the other hand, you may be right about the Civil War. If the Southerners had won the war, they might have banned soccer in order to encourage more kids to play American football! Something to think about anyway.

Come to think of it, it also commemorates the Confederate Soldiers who died in the Civil War. That really makes one think twice about saying that Memorial Day commemorates those who lost their lives to keep us free, particularly if you happen to be black.
