If the $ isn't going to pay coaches fair wages where is it going? In the case of MPS, it may be going to a fat bottom line profit.
they get free housing, so accounting for that they get a fair wage.

Yes, I own a Ford Pinto and I eat at McDonalds, so I guess that's like MPS/GPS right? I own a 1000 shares of MCD a publicly traded company, so I know far more about its bottom line than those who fork over thousands of dollars to participate in the MPS/GPS factory.

They beg the parents of the players to house them. These guys are sleeping on couches in basements.

Do other boys' clubs who participate in NEP follow this model in the weeks before tryouts?

From experience at other clubs (NEFC, Stars, Scorps), the coach will tell you (or your player) if they want to keep them and will probably not say too much to the player they don't want to keep or are on the fence about. However, have never experienced the "pay now or possibly lose your spot" tactic employed by MPS.

This is done in a PANIC, as they are afraid to let the good players attend other clubs tryouts.

This is a grey area, but MPS is just a money making machine. No one cares about who they sign, as long as they have enough players to keep the low level English speaking coaches in beer and board. Cheerio !

Unfortunately it's happened at every team my kid has played on. I beleive it's the same on the STARS as my kid has friends on that team and they all are returning yet the tryouts haven't happened. Only difference is MPS takes everybody!!!! they do not know how to say NO. There are kids on teams now that should be maybe playing in a less competitive environment. (I'm being very very PC here)

A good indicator of where you fit is what happen during the end of season evals. Some kids said little was given to them for changes where others looked like a mack truck just ran over them.
