Until the recent switch to statewide power rankings, it would've been near impossible to make the tourney with 4 wins. You would need to go 4-4-10 (or any # of ties)

    St. Johh's of Shrewsbury
    Xaverian
    Newton North

I think St. John's Prep will take it, but I'm cheering on Newton North since they are the only public school in the Final 4.

Newton North entered the tournaement with a 4-9-5 record. In all my years of following high school soccer, since the early 1990s, I can't recall a 4 win team making it to the state semifinals at the D-1 level.

2011? Made Final Four. Was first year coaching. Had similar record. Had four sophomores who all played for FCGB. Three would go on to play on D1 college programs.

Where the BOO WHO WESTERN MASS CREW!?!?!

1 West Mass team in the final 4 across the top 4 boys divisions.

This new format is a big wake up call and eye opener to the western part of the state. Barely even a sniff at a state title.

Yes, so we took a vote. All of Massachusetts west of I-495 will be sold to Elon Musk. We don’t want it or need it. Coaches must open the door to parents, and because this is new territory in the coach-parent relationship, they must also clearly define welcome and accepted behavior and be willing to close the door when necessary because there also must be healthy boundaries in our relationships.

2010 Newton North won the north sectional(State final 4) with a 7-5-6 record. NN had a tough road to get there, needing to get by Lexington, Brookline, Masconomet and Acton Boxboro. Lost to New Bedford in the N vs S final 2-1 in OT.

2011 was insane as well. You had teams like Billerica, Greater New Bedford Chelsea making their sectional Final 4, while just about every favorite was eliminated.

                Very true.

You used to have the Sullivan rule. It was something like if you don't make the tournament a certain number years in a row, you received an automatic invite.

If you finished 2nd in your division, you received an automatic berth, no matter your record.

Only for D-2 teams and lower. If you went 2-10-4 for example, but were say 2-1-4(0-9 vs higher division) against teams in your division and below, you could also qualify that way.

Many ages ago, back before anyone now playing high school soccer was born you would need .600 winning percentage to make the tournament. This was before the year 2000. I don't recall exactly what year, but I can check.

It's interesting, because before this new format, other than Catholic schools in the east, it was always the west winning the state titles. The west also had fewer games(less tired legs), which made a huge difference.

AlexFilides: I believe, for the most part, people are fairly intuitive. People who are in crisis are especially sensitive, and ready to pick up on anything. That includes any type of feedback you’re providing. If you are going to be dishonest when dealing with someone in crisis, (for instance, you tell them you’re going to do something when you know that you’re not) you need to realize that doing so, is something that can get you into trouble. Are you going to get caught in it? Most likely. Because they know you’re bluffing and you are under the microscope at that moment due to their heightened state.

The question should be, Alex, are you a parent or a the coach and do you be attentive to your child’s needs, not your drinking. If a parent wants information, schedule a time to talk in person, not by email or text. If a parent is afraid to ask questions, that’s on the parent not the coach. Problem is, too many parents think they know what’s better for the team than the coach. Focus on your player and what is in his/her control. That’s an essential life-skill. My kids have had great coaches and bad coaches. I’ve had good bosses and bad bosses. Put in the work at the Betty Ford clinic.

Of course. Nearly all EMass teams get home games due to crap seeding. Did you Baystate Junkies notice all but one of your worst teams got cleaned out?

Well of Western MA teams stopped having to take forfeits that hurts their power rankings because they insist on doing the western ma cup - they’d be higher seeded.
