As long as your player's interests align with the coach's interests, you will never see their true side.
Watch for how they treat parents and players that disagree with them. Not the actual decision made, but the manner in which the treatment occurs.
There are many ego-maniacs in the youth soccer coaching ranks.

It's always an ongoing process of evaluation. The above point about giving kids constructive feedback on how to improve is a good one.
I agree with your emphasis on feedback and evaluation. The best coach my daughter had would formally meet with every player 3 or 4 times a season(once before the season, in the middle and once after the season); Giving each player regular feedback on his' goals for them, their progress and ways they could continue to improve in and outside of practice/games.

No bigger egomaniac than SM. Hopefully his director days are done.

At least SM doesn’t try to hide it. I’ll give him that. What you see is what you get. EB is slimy ——worst kind of snake.

Two things: First, there are plenty of licensed coaches, even licensed to a very high level who simply just aren't that good at inspiring kids and teaching. The vast majority follow their practice plan and can't even "read the room". Second, watch a practice session and listen to the coach... what's their tone of voice? Are they organized but able to adapt quickly to unexpected situations during both practices and games? In practices, how long are players "resting" vs being active? To finish, for me a sign of a great coach is one that presents problems but does NOT provide solutions to players... rather, allows players to find their own solutions.

Your coach can have many licenses but licenses won’t tell you who the coach is as person. Their winning records doesn’t tell the whole story.
                just a few questions…
Does your coach care about all the players or play favorites?
Does your coach cancel practices regularly?
Does your coach ever offer praise or only criticism?
Does your coach reward players who show up for practices all winter?
Does your coach develop all players on his team?
Does your players coach return emails and communicate well?

Plenty of coaches miss the mark in club. Not just SM. We have had good and bad. We’ve had ones that start out good and then it goes south when Coach seems to lose interest in the team.

Ahhhhh you really have never seen a great coach then! Or you’re laughing at this comment just like I am. I have never heard this come out of any sane persons mouth.
