Guessing you are you talking about the 2010s ECRL2 South group of mid level players? Isn’t that the group of parents who are horrible and called out for obnoxious behavior last weekend? I’m sure Bayside will be happy to absorb them. Lateral move with similar parents.

Surf management were very happy to announce it to all their State Navy teams. Im sure something will come out on social media at the right time,

Their state navy teams did not take it how they expected, hence the social media silence.

They should have been in GA next year, but NEFC wanted competition out. Doing really well in DPL/NAL does nothing to get into GA. Why stay there while you get into ECRL?

Every parent we know on Navy has been happy and telling us about the ECRL since the NEFC tournament. The people posting here saying the opposite are not honest. But what’s new?

I expect you are right. (though I know for sure. Some of them are calling at ECNL)

but tbf I doubt they understand it . a lot of parents don’t even know what team they’re playing on any given day, much less what league they’re in and what other teams are in that league. I doubt that many parents have looked at the strength of teams in this league and their locations, and what that means for travel

In the current messed up environment, we’re doing the right thing for players is apparently impossible for the leagues, this move makes sense for Surf in the long run. But it’s not gonna fix the problem that their league matches are not competitive for them.

If I were a Navy parent that didn't know how the club soccer system works I would be happy with the move to ECNL-R because I would believe they sales pitch that this is a pathway for NE Surf to get real ECNL.
If I were a Navy parent that does know how the club soccer system works I would be happy with the move to ECNL-R and I would be calling all the real ECNL clubs to get my player into some practices in the hope she could land a spot there.

The parents’ responses have been mixed. The ones who understand the landscape know that we’re entering a league that’s not as strong as the other ECRL leagues (both boys and girls), so the competition isn’t much better but need to travel a lot more. Also for college exposure, the second ECRL leagues aren’t ideal either. The parents recognize that this is a move for the long term to eventually get into ECNL, mainly for the younger groups, but for the older groups it’s not ideal.

How young are we talking? As in, what birth year will this likely benefit in the longterm?

the 2014s, 2013s, 2012s and 2011s. all very strong age groups at Surf. big drop off at 2010 tho

If they’re already in high school, the move is not great. The new ECRL divisions they are entering are weak. How young? Good question. It really depends on how quickly they can move to the stronger divisions, including ECNL. Will they get promoted after one season? 3 seasons? That’s a big unknown.

Moving was probably the right thing for the club long term. They might not have had any real choice with what has happened at GA. They're a very good program, fielding strong teams without having the "pathway" to sell. It's really the thing that's holding them back. They were supposedly trying to get into GA and it looks like NEFC was blocking them. The issue they'll have is that just like NEFC blocked them in GA, Stars and now SSS will probably try to block them in ECNL. I'm sure strategically, neither of them wants to see Surf get ECNL. The Newton location would draw an awful lot of their talent base. Not sure who is on the ECNL Board, but it likely comes down to politics--will Surf have enough powerful allies (San Diego Surf?) to outvote its opponents on the board (assuming Stars would be).
As for the parents, it's probably a step down in comp level from DPL where they were already usually at the top of the tables. And with more travel. But ECRL should improve and DPL will probably go the other way.

ECRL is the same level as DPL. Embarrassing that’s all NE surf can get

I can see the traditional viewpoint of "Stars and Scorpions are blocking other local clubs from ECNL" but at this point with SSS having a real ECNL membership the league itself would (should) seriously question if NE Surf or any other MA club could field competitive teams. MA teams already getting their backsides handed to them if they venture past state lines so I don't think diluting the teams more is a good idea for ECNL.
