My biggest frustration is the lack of programs available that have a strict emphasis on development. The youth soccer environment is so competitive that unless you’re the most talented there aren’t many opportunities to work with the best developmental coaches.

Referees and parents. Refs have a very difficult job and there are not enough good people interested in the position to put up with it all, but they still need to be judged and held accountable, as there are some very poor referees who continue to be employed to help ruin games. Parents should have the right, and the duty, to rate the referees after the game, positive and negative. Referees should also have the right and duty to yellow and red card parents more often. The game should be stopped and the offending parent’s name and player should be noted, and all cards reported to their club. Referees put up with too much abuse, allowing parents to yell things across the field at them they would never say to their face.

My main concern now for my daughter now that she is a sophomore in high school is managing club soccer with high school soccer and avoiding injury or over play. My daughter was a starting varsity player in high school when she was a freshman. She is also a key player / starter for her club soccer team which plays in showcase tournaments as well as GA and National League. Girls at this age and level play so hard and put so much into the game that injury seems inevitable. We have had several of our superior club soccer players get injured this high school season and it all seems to stem from over play.

It becomes more about the business and not the truth of development for the player. Rosters are filled up to support the desire of income and not the best interest for the player to have playing time and be seen by college recruits. I have watched D1 and D2 talented players “ride the bench” during games because of the “need to win”. I am in the throes of moving my son to a new team for the sake of advanced development and ability to move up.
