Obviously there is the portal but in reality how does a player go about transferring? My understanding is that you are not supposed to have contact until entering the portal but also once you enter the portal you can’t go back. Is that more because the existing coach won’t be happy or or it more than that? What about admissions process? How does a player find options? D3 player who is playing a lot but current team performance is not good and other player attitude very defeated. Kid has a strong competitive drive so may potentially be looking for other options. Just trying to understand how to go about transferring if he decides to transfer. I would appreciate any insight if resources to check out.

D3 doesn’t use the portal. The way my kid did it after soccer season ended freshman year was to figure out some schools that would work - most importantly academic fit and also somewhere they could play. There is a form that you can fill out that gives you 30 days from the time you start contacting coaches where the coaches/ADs at the schools you contact cannot tell your coach/AD. After that time though, they will report to your school that you have made contact with them and that can get awkward depending on the coach. My kid emailed coaches with a highlight video from the season and after speaking to them on the phone did some official overnight visits. The end result was a much better social/academic/soccer fit than the previous school. It’s not easy because it requires a time commitment including emailing coaches, visiting schools and filling out applications (getting recs from professors, having transcripts sent and writing essays) while still keeping up with school work. It’s kind of scary to have to start over for the second year in a row but it was the absolute right move for my kid. This was fall of 2019 so maybe things have changed since then. Also it could be sticky if your son decides to transfer to a school within the conference he is playing in now because the coaches have professional relationships and may be hesitant to take a kid from a school they play regularly. Best of luck!
