    Soccer Rankings App

Curious as to how they calculate the rankings in this app and whether it is more accurate than GotSport? It seems to be a lot less transparent which I don't love.

If you’re talking about the Soccer Rankings app it’s pretty clear and obvious they use an algorithm to calculate rankings. Nothing’s perfect since rosters change, etc, but it’s much better than got soccer. Best use is for out of state tourneys so coaches can enter teams in the right division.

Essentially they use all games played and consider the strength of the opponents. It's the only legit way to do rankings. And of course it still has issues - it can't be precise, and it can't factor in players added to or missing from a roster, for example in tournaments.

If you want transparency - click on a team you can see all the data (games played).

It's similar to MIAA Power Rankings, which are used to seed the state tournaments. See slides 3-4 here here:
      https://miaa.net/wp-content/uploads/...esentation.pdf

GotSoccer assigns an arbitrary number of points to a tournament, some tournaments get huge points; and a small number to league play. There's zero transparency on how they come up with those numbers. Lots of games played don't get factored into the rankings. The only thing GotSoccer is useful for is seeing game history, if you don't have the app.

For an explanation of how the app determines rankings, click the gadget icon on the bottom of the app and then click on the FAQ's. Of course, no rankings app is perfect and rankings are always debatable. That's why they're entertaining.
This app has a "PREDICT RESULTS" function that is fun to use and, in our experience, has been weirdly accurate in the absence or addition of a team's key players.

With this app….In my experience, our team loses to teams ranked higher than us, and wins against teams ranked lower. If fact, it makes me wonder why we even bother to play!

LOL. "They use an algorithm". No kidding. That's like saying a car runs using an engine. The question is not whether it uses an algorithm, but rather what the algorithm is -- what variables it takes into consideration and the relative weighing of those different variables. LOL.

Not at all. Knowing that they are using an algorithm based on game history, intended to be impartial, tells you almost all you need to know. Contrast GotSoccer, which weights the tournaments that use them for schedules and results, and excludes anything that’s not in their system. It’s pay to play.

You don’t need the details of the algorithm, and there’s no reason why you should get them. That belongs to the guy who runs the app. He has zero reason to prefer one team over another, or one leg over another, etc. They are not paying him, the way that they pay GotSoccer.

Got soccer doesn’t differentiate quality of opponent. You can have a good team who loses tournaments because they play up against tougher completion. That team would receive 0 gotsoccer points. Alternatively you can have a mediocre team who plays a lot of tournaments against weaker competition, wins and racks up lots of gotsoccer points.

the soccer rankings app may not be 100% perfect but it tries to account for quality of opponents. It is far more accurate than got soccer points.

Classic knuckle dragger response. The fact that you can't see the value in using an algorithm that factors in strength of opponent (whether perfectly precise or not), vs. a site that hands out points based on whether or not they get paid is comical.

Not the poster here but this guy is clearly not trying to big one up over the other. He's just stating that saying its 'an algorithm' means nothing to anyone, what is the algorithm?

"that factors in strength of opponent" is the important thing here. You get more credit for beating teams that beat good teams, less credit for losing to teams that lose to bad teams, etc. There is no artificial weighting based on event, it's just an evaluation of results vs. individual opponents that have their own history. There isn't, and shouldn't be a perfect youth soccer rankings app, especially considering all the playing up, down, multiple teams, etc., but it's a decent indicator. I just know that getting 500 points for winning a 3rd tier division doesn't make you better than a 1st tier team that came in 3 of 4 and got 75 points.

Aww little liberal boy big mad someone disagrees with him. Ranking youth soccer teams is the stupidest thing you could possibly do. Like you get noce and hard lnowing Mia's u11 team is 3rd in the state? Or you get mad because some formula which doesn't include all the games has her 5th. Worry about your kid getting better every day and stop d@@ @ measuring her team. Then you wonder why mia is on the bench.

actually, you’re not being so bright here yourself. This person is posting just to get a reaction, and you’re giving it to them. It’s not as if there’s anything in their post of substance to respond to, anything to discuss, so why respond?
