    SoccerAmerica: Preventing Lopsided Scores

    http://www.socceramerica.com/article...ed-scores.html

Decent article from a ref offering some common senses suggestions. An excerpt to follow:

"Coaches need to put limitations in place before games with overmatched opponents instead of putting them in place when the score is 5-0. As a referee, I can tell when the game is going to be a mismatch just by watching the teams practice before the match. The coaches should be in an even better position as they probably know the scores of previous games vs. common opponents better than I do.

It’s discouraging when the starting team goes up 5-0, then the coach puts in the subs with limitations. It’s as if the players on the same team are not being treated equally. For me, a better idea would be to put a limitation on the starting team from the kickoff. If the game is more competitive than believed, the limitation can be eased."

I believe strongly that Mass Youth's decision to eliminate reporting scores/standings was a mistake. Perhaps it was well-intended (as much as it may have been PC driven), but it has an impractical and counter-productive impact when individual coaches are less informed (at least if this writer is making a valid point about coaches).

I realize that leagues still receive score reports through referees, and yes, there might be a widespread collaborative effort to place teams in the appropriate divisions to promote competitive play as much as possible, but there are still some clubs and towns who aren't so well-intended.

Personally, I think the bigger issue is how parents react. Finding a team down 5-0 is no big deal, even early in a game, yet some parents think and act like it's the end of the world. Go read the article posted somewhere in this forum about teaching kids to develop grit. It's time to quit treating your kids like they are delicate flowers.

That's a valid point for sure. Every 6-1 score or worse isn't a case where some evil coach set out to embarrass a bunch of 9 year olds...and by the way, every kid out there is hoping to score as many goals as possible. So to your point, if the parents weren't part of the equation - the coaches letting the kids just play, even if the score was lopsided, we probably wouldn't have the issues that we do have. For many parents, they don't take losing big nearly as well as their kids.

Take the adults out of the situation and what would the kids do? Restructure the teams to balance them. Why can't this be done? Because the adults won't let it.

There's a strong case for how building teams and team specific training (as opposed to group training) fuels the competitive culture and erodes development of largest number of players, contributing to losing players entirely far too early (U12). The current practice/system is essentially handing out life sentences in effective before that judgment can possibly be known in most cases all for competitive pursuits (not developmental). The idea that there even could be this evening out a year or to later is effectively dismissed in practice.
