    Penalty kick shootouts-your thoughts?

Am I the only one that hates them? I know it’s part of game but there’s got to be a better way. 5 more minutes of play? I guess I’m soft but I don’t think it definitely says who is the “better team”. Your thoughts?

does any single game definitely say who is better? the aim of the exercise is to decide a winner today without compromising the athletes. Unless you plan on playing until there is a winner, why 5 mins? why not another full game?

Yeah, it's part of the game. A good team/coach prepares for them. I've got a GK so no one hates them more than me, but IT IS PART OF THE GAME.

Nobody likes them, but there isn’t a safe realistic alternative. So suggest you just get good at them and cross your e

leagues that care about establishing the best team over a larger sample size are set up that way. Media love one game for all the marbles. The concept of "best" is open to interpretation in team sports

Shootouts stink. Would be interesting to see it go 7v7 or 5v5 for 10min. Little bit like the NHL, the space it would open up would surely create some scoring opportunities.

5v5 full field? What the hell? Game would turn into sloppy and dangerous exhaustion in the first minute

I submit this. The 22 that were on the field at the end of the game pick up a ball and start juggling. Once one team loses all their jugglers they lose. If you are still juggling you can try to mess up you opponents juggle just as long as you can keep juggling in the process.

There is already the possibility of 30 minutes of extra time if the match is even after the first 90. Only if it's still tied after 120 does it go to a penalty shoot out.

Not for youth teams, it's much less. But yeah, it's part of the game. Sometimes the W doesn't go to the better team but that's how any game can go with a lucky shot or bad ref call. As said above coaches should be preparing teams for it in any kind of playoff/championship situation. That means shelling your GKs, having all players practicing shots and pre determining who your shooters will be.

The W always goes to the better team! The winner at the end is always the better team... mathematical fact.

Coaches absolutely can prepare their teams for it. A lot of times I hear people say that it all comes down to luck and nothing could be further from the truth... luck is an excuse that losers use to justify losing. Practice, practice, practice.

^^^This.... If you are not having your GK and players take PKs throughout the year during practices then you are not preparing your team properly. Same for game like scenarios such as up or down 1 goal in the last 5 minutes of a game, down a player due to a red card, etc. Take the last 10 minutes of a practice at least once a week to work on different scenarios, especially U12 and up. The players will be better prepared as a result.

I hate it. I hate teams that play for a 0-0 tie to force PKs. Lazy coaching. Bad soccer. Horrible to watch.

The only thing about soccer i hate more is the faulty coding mess that is TS.

The "play for the tie" stereotype is completely overblown. It happens very rarely. No one wants them because of the risks.

That said, coaches definitely can prep their teams for it. Our HS coach spends at least half each practice on PKs when playoffs start. It has paid off a number of times over the 9 years my kids have been there.
