One might assume that there will be some trades made and perhaps she will end up closer to home.

Go pick a random U14 girls soccer player from Mass and ask her who Kristie Mewis is...Sydney Leroux, on the other hand. You don't expect Scott Caldwell to be instantly responsible for selling thousands more Revs tickets, do you? In any event, the Breakers did great at Dilboy last year in the WPSL Elite league. Kristie Mewis would have been a good addition to the team for many reasons, but an immediate attendance bump wouldn't be one of them.
Every player on my kid's U13 team knows who she is

Good for you - I guarantee your team is the exception and not the rule.

Different poster responding. I think you are wrong about that. Any coach worth their weight would be pointing out a local player that has made it to that level of play.

My kid plays college soccer and the college does a promotion to get youth soccer organizations to their games. When our hometown has sent their players, they act as if my daughter is Mia Hamm and following the games have asked for her autograph on the game brochure. Very flattering, to be sure, but I don't mention this to brag. I just point out that the coaches who are bringing their kids to the game make sure their players know player X is from their hometown to provide them with a role model. I'm not a coach, but I did the same thing and often made time to take my daughter when she was younger to college games and even high school games to watch players I knew had made it to the NT level.

Yes, us from Stars don't do that because we are the top. I smell jealousy. KM is like sun in Massachusetts. Just one palm hand will not block it from shining.

I'm not wrong - I coach at all different levels, and you are right that good coaches are always encouraging their players to be better students and followers of the game. But if you line up a group of players from, lets just say the North Shore, and it is an array of players between the ages of 10-18 with a wide scope of experience with the sport (club, town, high school, recreational, advanced, etc.) only the ones who really follow the game will know who KM is. But even most of those girls are going to be more interested in attending a Breakers game to see players like Sydney Leroux and Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo, etc., etc.

Don't get me wrong - I love what KM has done, I am beyond happy for her, and who knows, she may develop into a "household" name. But she is not one now, except among those of us who live and breathe this sport. Sadly, not enough youth players really live and breathe the game.

Maybe my expectations of an attendance bump is too high. Could she help bring in maybe 100 fans a game? Possibly. But I would be shocked if KM joined the Breakers and their attendance went from, say 4K a game to 5K a game. (Random numbers, I don't know what capacity is at Dillboy - plus, pretty sure they sold out an awful lot last year at Dillboy anyway).

The fact that Dimartino was taken at #22, despite the two awful last years at BC shows that the player personnel people in WNY are fools. Doesn't fill you with faith that ths incarnation of Women's Pro Soccer is going to be succesful!!

I know lots of adults who know who she is, but we're not sure how to pronounce her last name- can you help us with that?

Good point. The lack of overall depth in the womens professional game leads to an inferior product on the field. It is almost unwatchable

Totally agree. Biggest problem with Womens Pro (team) sports is that there is very little translation from participation to fandom. I do not think a majority of women consider going to a female pro game a good spend of their time or money. Most of the fans are kids (girls) who are current players and are there because they play the game and want to see their heroes play. What happens when these girls grow up? They do not remain fans of the game and that is why these leagues struggle. Would a group of women buy a bunch of tickets to a game and attend with their friends? If women do attend a game it is typically a male pro sport and it with a male or a mixed group. It is simply a gender difference on how to spend free time and money.

Yes that was unbelievable - especially considering the reputation she has for being difficult.

I think you may be the exception. Cheched with my daughter and a couple of her friends, they all knew KM and not a one knew SL.

If true...great, you took them to a BC game a few times, but apparently you didn't let them watch the Olympics. That is sad, and actually reinforces the point that most young girls who play soccer really don't pay much attention to the sport.

I would think that any young female soccer player who 'knows' about KM would also know about SL since KM and SL are best buddies.
