Addendum: btw, I also agree that this was not the worst offense ever committed, but a suspension is entirely fair and probably needed even for her safety. If a kid can be suspended drinking a beer or puffing a joint in high school or college then a suspension here is absolutely necessary. So, in this real world, some of you really think "a stern talking to" would have sufficed???

Did you really just compare this to the problems at Penn State or Amherst????

"BTW, I'm no BC fan, but good job AD. Handled this better so far than Amherst or Penn State did."
Couldn't let this one go. Comparing a ball in the face to multiple rapes of multiple minors is crap, and you know it. Also, the Amherst player served a two-game suspension, so doesn't that trump the BC one-game suspension?

Tweeting insults of this nature about the opponent you are about to play is horrible judgment at best. I don't there was any intent to "speak out" out child sexual abuse here. And yes, I am sure there is not a D1 school in the country that does not review guidelines for social media for student-athletes.
The only semi-cogent argument made on this thread is the idea that she undersestimated the reach of her tweets. That is possible and I'm sure she did not expect the firestorm that ensued. That said, she should know just from seeing what happens to the tweets of professional athletes and other high profile persons (Donald Trump and others just a week or so ago).
Those of you bringing in Benghazi and somehow using this to take another jab at Obama are truly lowly creatures. And people insist it isn't racist. States petitioning to secede from the Union. Redneck musicians threatening to kill. Celebrities talking about the "worst scam ever perpretrated against the American people." Accusations of being a dangerous terrorist Muslim. All that for just being a center left President? Right. Imagine how easily he would have won if he wasn't facing raw, primitive, white redneck racism every single day. I'm surprised he isn't being blamed for the Needham PK. Oh, that's right, he was for Somerville because they have minorities who also don't have birth certificates.

Coming from the Hypocrites on the Hill who have more skeltons in the closet that they need 2 closets, this reaction is disingenuous at best. Total overreaction to some benign sophomoric humor against an insitution that deserves no protection from ridicule whatsoever. Thought Police - 1, 1st Amendment - 0

Whether the prior post suggesting that condemning SM's tweets is the equivalent to sweeping Sandusky under the rug or that the grandstanding about Sandusky is a necessary component to this story, the details or topic of the tweets are IRRELEVANT - SM's choice to engage in conduct that crosses a line of good judgment and inappropriateness, especially in a public forum is all that matters.

A student athlete is a representative of the university and, when they step out into the general public they have a responsibility for carry themselves in an appropriate way.
This is simply a case of 'when in public, you are representing BC and should behave accordingly'
You can say what you want among friends but when you are a representative of the university you can't shout it from the rooftops.
