All of it is a risk. Players take risks that the coaches will keep their word. Coaches take risks that the player will stay in shape and motivated.

The greater risk is offering a scholarship to a sophomore in high school. Too many years out and things change on both sides. Players and programs survived this so taking risks on players for a year or two is less risky.

Does that happen? Can't the first conversations start summer after their junior year?

It's summer after sophomore year. But yes before the rules were changed a few years ago some studs were getting offers in 8th grade, many more as freshmen. It was getting absurd so the NCAA changed it to June. 15th after sophomore year
