Now I need to ask... how are schedules put together? Are they set by MIAA? Or are they put together by the schools themselves?
Either way, what criteria do they follow to determine schedules? Is it simply related to geographical distance? What factors are considered one setting regular season schecules?

AD and coaches put together schedules, outside the league at least. Usually a two year commitment with a home/home. The coach in out town is a pansy so he only schedule softies..its hurts in rankings and shows up when the games get faster. However, he racks up wins and looks heroic. Scheduling can be tricky

ADs and Coaches. Each ream belongs to a league which creates the framework of their schedules. It used to be that each team played the teams in their league twice a season, one home and one away. Now there is a mix of that with non league games, The champs of the leagues went to the playoffs ( North vs South then East vs West). Sometimes you had qualifiers without winning records. Generally it was over 500 gets you in. Now the teams have to use the non league games to up the competitiveness of their schedule. School Location for the playoffs no longer matters as it is seeding that drives who plays who. The prior thought was that the West faced an easier road to the finals than the East teams so the new power rankings were thought to even things out, it would be interesting to see the raw data in the power rankings call,

So basically an AD and coach can pretty much work out a schedule which guarantees them a winning record year after year. If they make the playoffs and lose the first round, it don't matter... they won 90% of their games, so they have an easy season in terms of keeping parents happy.

Yes but soft scheduling can hurt. With # of wins you can qualify for playoffs ( not sure if they are still doing the Covid everyone in who wants to be) but you seating will stink. In power ratings you can win and still drop in rating.

There's an undefeated team in our league, who's ranked 3rd. I wonder if that is because of their less competitive schedule?

Except you have to get it to 5 or 6 before you can play the backend of your bench.
