Serious question - if it were $100 would that have pulled in more refs? Maybe they need to get real and have some way to offer more incentive to refs on days like that. They could make it work if they wanted to.

Ref assignor was begging me to ref... If the other refs are like me they said you are out of your mind if you think I'm running around in 35 degrees and raining or snowing the first week in March for $50.

Fellow referee here. It's a monopoly on referees here in MA unfortunately especially tournaments. There is one group doing all the work and the pay is garbage. We haven't seen an increase in our game fees for a while.
No I do not want to drive to Weymouth (2hrs from me) to do games for 40 dollars. It's just not worth it. I'd rather spend my day getting really for the better games in the spring... Also, club soccer pays less than TOWN soccer because guess what - same group assigns.
Referees want to be there and be part of the game - a game we all love to be able to handle your bull**** (parents and coaches and players) but if we are not compensated well enough then go find other referees.

Agreed. My daughter had an 8am game scheduled. I pulled into the parking lot at 720 and saw a snow covered field and 30 seconds later got a notification that the game was cancelled. We were dressed for <20 degree AM weather...it's not like it changed last minute.

You left out another really messed up part. For the games that weren’t played, THEY ENTERED THE SURF TEAMS AS HAVING WON THE GAMES and advanced them to the finals. The claim is that the games couldn’t be rescheduled and it was based on the tiebreakers, but even then they didn’t follow their own stated procedures. And now those games are listed in the tournament record as games played and won by Surf. I can’t imagine a tournament being run that way. I would be completely embarrassed to have even tried to do that to another club.

The NEFC tournament this weekend has been so much better, and not just because of the weather. (Which was not great yesterday either.)
