My child does not play for Stars. We were told that we needed to give the coach money for travel/hotel expenses and it was then taken from the team kitty. We were told it was standard practice although we had never been asked to do this before. I thought it was strange but had no reason to question it until this thread. Interesting.
Coaches travel gets paid for, either its through the team kitty (usually on teams with an undefined schedule coming into the season) or it is priced into the team fee.

Depends on the club.
This is an absolute fact.. coaches do not come out of pocket for travel expenses. Now the issue really is how do these expenses get paid. One way is to have parents from that specific team kick in money to cover these expenses. The other way is to build them into the fee and then have all of the parents in the club cover them. It really all comes down to a philosophical discussion who is responsible for a coaches expenses, the team that he incurred them for or the club. One issue to take into account is accountability. When a coach has to submit their expenses to the team manager it tends to get a little embrassing if they appear excessive. When a coach only has to submit their expenses to the club's treasurer they tend to be processed and paid without much review.

Really? You don't think a coach might be more hesitant to submit a large expense report to a) the people he is employed by and alse b) the people who have to run the club's budget?

All depends upon who is looking doesn't it. I know in my company travel expenses are generally rubber stamped and about once a year (usually just before audits) accounting starts to bust stones and everyone has to clean up their act. Usually last about a couple of weeks then it is back to business as usual.
Jesus, Mary and Saint Joseph. It's tough to get a straight answer around here.
To the OP: I read that your daughter is going to try out for next year's U14s? Based out of Acton? The fee will include: training for the entire year, a set number of tournaments that INCLUDE coaches travel, practice kit (2 shirts, shorts, socks, blah, blah, blah), insurance. Given last year's number, my guess for the Athletics next year would be about $2,500, plus or minus a hundy.
It's a new uniform year so you'll need a game kit if you're coming in from the outside. Like all clubs, that'll run you between $200-$300. I'd advise you to save a little cash by skipping the track suit. Buy a sweat shirt and sweat pants at Stars Cup - the girls wear those all the time in the cooler months. Invest in Under Armour since these teams train outside during the cold months. The Nike stuff is nice, washes and wears well. Sizes can be funky though: tops run small, shorts run big.
Team kitty varies from team to team but plan on another hundy. There may or may not be futsal. There may or may not be winter indoor leagues. Extras are "optional" and considered out-of-pocket costs on top of the fee. Kitty might pay for coach's gifts or numbers on the practice jersey, meals on the road, etc. Good news is: it's all spelled out in advance by team manager.
The biggest additional expense will be out-of-state travel for tournaments or league games.
Budget for U14 age group: $4k +/- for August 2012 through June 2013. ENCL team is similar except travel costs are higher. So is the intensity.

Good luck to your daughter.
OP here and thanks for the info. We have decided to pass but good luck to those who are going. My daughter has been approached by two other teams that are a little lower in costs so we plan to attend those tryouts.
And you've made this decision based on the "guess" of a poster rather than calling the club and asking.....
OP again, the answer is no. I talked to three parents of existing players. The decision is actually not about the money but more about the overall atmosphere of the sidelines. While my daughter knows several players she decided to go to another club for 1 year, train and then might make the move next year instead. The other two clubs she also have friends on and feels she will have a different experience.

Sounds like you made the right call. I would never force a kid to go to a club that is that intense unless it is something that they really wanted. They'd be miserable as would you.

Good for you it's not like they are getting that much different of an experience on the field. Sure they have success but if it is on the sidelines then it is also transferred to the bench/field.

It's so different. They are training like they are on the National team, trust me.
The practices are coach driven so it depends on the coach. The level of intensity at these training sessions is much greater than it was at our previous club.

Thanks for the informative post. This is in line to what I heard so we decided to go the MPS route.
