Re: all new england
I don't know if "political" is the correct word.
From what I understand, and I may be worng, only certain coaches who have obtained certain credentials are allowed to vote once you get to All-New England and All-American. Which means if you're a player who has a high school coach who does not advocate for his players and/or is not allowed to vote.....you better be impressing a lot of coaches who do vote.
I know there is a process where all coaches have a say up to a certain point in voting for the following awards. I'm not sure where certain coaches can do more for their particular players.
- All-Conference
- All-Eastern/Western/Cetral MA
- All-State
- All-New England
- All-American

A variety of factors. The big one is political.

And sorry your kid missed out. There's always next year. Unless you're one of those parents that thinks every kid that's on a roster should be named an All-New England selection so that the kids who don't make it don't experience feelings of inadequacy and rejection.

Re: all new england
Children, please!
Like so many things in American soccer, it is as much about who you know as how good you are. To state that an all-anything in high school sports is not political would be foolish. Perhaps the best way to think about it is this: many top players don't play soccer for their HS for fear of injury, concern about acquiring bad habits, burn out, etc. Many players considered to be best in class in a HS format tend to have the very attributes that a top tier college coach would shun: overly aggressive, lack of field vision, lack of touch, poor form, single-footedness, misinformed as to the rules of the game, etc. Generally they are fast, aggressive and poorly coached. Some are "known" to the soccer community and thus crowned with the title of all-whatever, but most just fill the void that ignorant coaches who feel they know the game because they played the game 30 years ago feel is theirs to fill.
Not to be cynical, but most of those in MA that vote on these things are part of the club of former players that the game has left behind. Something else to consider...how many of you know who makes these decisions, what the selection criteria is or how many times, once these players are identified, they are observed in game situations by the "selection committee"? Thought so....
Get over it. If your child was picked, congratulations. If not, don't sweat it. If they are ready, willing and able to play high level soccer there is a program out there looking for them.
