    U14 going into 8th grade

Next September, my current U14 son will not be going into HS (repeated a grade), but will be entering 8th grade. Are there any options for him to play club soccer in the fall? He is currently on a team, but they will go to winter/spring come Sept. He misses the Aug. soccer cut off by less than a month.

It will be awful for him if he can't play any soccer in the fall. Any ideas?

maybe he should study...if you and he put that much interest in academics you wouldn't have to worry about soccer.

Sorry I can't answer your question but how about refereeing?

Its good work experience, related to something he likes, and it will help pay for those club fees.

Not funny!! The OP asked a genuine question and you come back with this? Don't bother responding next time.

Many summer birthdays repeat a year early on in the education.

I don't know of any options for him to play next year. Waiver?

Middle School doesn't have a team? I know the competition can be suspect but at least it's playing. If you live in a town where the MS and the HS share the same campus (Tyngsboro/Dracut), he can play as 8th grader.

Depending on his birth year he might eligible to play on the Bolts PreAcademy team. If he is a 1998 player, he would be able to play on that team next year...assuming that he makes the team.
Otherwise, he should look into other club activities for the purposes of training during the fall season.

He can get a waiver on a Bays team but will have to apply early for it....I do not think he will be able to play on an MTOC team though...

In BAYS he can "play up" in the fall on a MTOC team but not in the spring because that's when MTOC is played.

This is correct. If your son lives in a town with a Bays team, he can play on that team in the fall, including a Division 1 or 2 Bays team. This is bylaw 5(c), which allows teams to request waivers for 8th graders in this position.

The waiver and age issue is a legal issue. It has been a topic of discussion. If the divisions were called Middle School, not a problem. If the division is U14 then some parent might bring a law suit about a U15 playing in a U14 division. Several leagues provide waivers, but fear of a possible law suit (there have been such) is causing a rethinking of such policies.

Playing up, the child's parents have assumed all risks.

It gets even thornier when the ADA act comes into play and the leagues must under federal and state law find a place for an older developmentally challenged child per the interpretation of the ADA rules.

Referee is not a bad suggestion. If the child is a strong player, the BAYS waiver would be most frustrating. As far as I know, he would have to play on a D3 team. From a socail standpoint it might surfice, but not for soccer development.

I know boys who have obtained coaching licenses (G & F) to work with the youngest players. If their school or church requires community service, such would normally fulfill the requirement.

In otherwords, what currently appears to be liability could be turned into an asset.
