I have been reading talking soccer for years, but I have never responded until now. I can't believe what has been written about this poor girl who broke her leg. I have known her for many years. You could not meet a nicer young lady than this girl. She is sitting at home in a cast out for eight weeks while some of you disparage her. I've watched her play basketball and soccer many times and I've never seen her play dirty. I feel very sorry for her and her father (who is a super guy). I wish her a speedy recovery.

Really ? the team manager , this is not good . Keeping her as team manager just sends a message to the other parents " it's OK to do and say whatever you want" .

Don't worry. No ones is really disparaging her. Everyone wishes her a full and speedy recovering and hopes by spring she'll be back on the pitch enjoying soccer again.
These posts are really only parents disparaging other parents perspectives, back and forth, in a ridiculous manner. This isn't about this player. It's all about the sidelines. Hope she's brand new soon!

What it does is put a hot head at the helm, which is worth thinking about. Team managers should be organized, calm, and in control. They are supposed to set the tone for the sidelines and step in when things get out of hand. If your team manager is the one with the shortest fuse, you really need to consider finding someone else to fill that role.

I applaud you for trying to deflect any negativity from the kid.
And I second your wish that she has a full and speedy recovery.

But if you think that there aren't parents that wish harm to players on other teams, you are naive, brother. They see things they don't understand, conclude that those things are obstacles to their own children's happiness and/or success, and immediately go into attack mode. Sure 99.99% of them support the generic statement of "I wish all kids well." But that doesn't stop them from sincerely and vociferously calling down hell and all it's hounds on an 8th grader that pushed their kid!

Oh of course if someone thinks anything ( adult, chid, animal, inanimate object) is trying to hurt their child they go nuts. That's human nature. And as we all know soccer parents tend to be a bit more nuts than others. But still, I assure you, no one in their right mind feels anything but sympathy when a child comes off the field on a stretcher. This thread is mostly just a couple of bad apples fighting.

                  But that's the point.
If you show up at the sidelines of an U14 soccer game, you are going to see other kids push, kick, hold and trip your kid.
If you think that gives you the right to go nuts, you need to stay away.

When my daughter was a U12 she would come to me complaining about who did what to her on the field. I told her it was her responsibility to establish her reputation on the field. I told her that if she acted with intent to injure a player that I would pull her from club. On the other hand if she chose to send a message to another player to protect herself I was ok with that. Other players learned quickly that she had sharp elbows. ACL's and ankles? Off limits. Knock the wind out of them? Elbow to the chin or solar plexus or knock them on their can shoulder to shoulder. After a season she had learned how to get respect and space on the field. Soccer is a tough game. If you or your kid can't handle it try badminton but do remember that the shuttlecock reaches speeds in excess of 100 MPH.

There are clean teams and dirty team. The cleanest team are the fast strong skilled teams. The dirty teams are the strong frustrated ones with less skill. I'm watching U17 now and this is still true.

All good players eventually learn how to protect themselves. Sometimes that means meeting dirty with dirty so dirty will back off and the game can clean up again. Dirty teams are still the exception to the rule, and their reputation precedes them.

No, the point was that a bunch of sicko adults were enjoying the fact that a young girl broke her leg, and I am simply saying that isn't true. The sicko adults are just enjoying ridiculing each other.

The last thing you want to have happen is your kid get labeled a cheap shot artist or even have your child play with one. Which is why I think it is very important to have the record straight with this player. Years ago our town team had a hockey dad who would routinely shout out "Get Some" to his daughter. When she heard that she would literally turn around and hockey check the nearest player. She was a head hunter. It was disgusting. I finally had enough and dealt with the guy but not before every team we played had all but put a bounty out on our kids. That team developed an awful reputation because of those two and you would not believe the things opposing teams did to our kids as a result, nor what the parents screamed at all of us. It was downright dangerous and not a whole lot of fun. This is not the same time of situation though and it is really not cool for the West parents to paint what happened in this situation as anything remotely similar.

I know the mom....not a shocker. Truely a case of living vicariously through your kid, trying recapture her own glory days. You just had to deal with her for two 35 min halves. Her daugther has that crazy woman in her head every day.

Why would she be picked as team manager ? We all have are days but it sounds like she has a history .

You'll find she elected herself, and at her best she's passionate and knows the game and really cares. At her worst, however, she is a serious liability, and given the kookiness of this age group, that's a problem.
