I can't agree with 3. Too close to the ball. Contact in my judgment was not deliberate. GK has the right to get to the ball. Offensive player was a little out of control.

How about the Droba incident (if he wasn't offside)? Was that deliberate? How do you judge intent in this case and the above case?

Not nearly as bad as the when Eduardo Silva was injured in a tackle. At least no blood or bones visible. But I do have to wonder if that one will end Drogba's career as a similar hit ended Twellman's.

That is why it is a judgment. It is a gut feel. I see many collisions between forwards and GK's and rarely do I call a foul. So long as both players are making a legitmate attempt to play the ball. The problem with judging from the sidelines is that it is hard to gauge the speed at which a GK has to make a decision on whether or not to hold the line. The GK in the first video is committed to the ball and IMHO does not deliberately make contact.

What difference does it make if the GK did it deliberately?
The only violation of Law 12 that requires "deliberately" is handling.

                  1. Dive. No call.
                  2. Foul on Black for tripping.
                  3. No call. Both players going for the ball. Goalie did not approach with intent to injure. If he led with a knee, forearm or elbow I would call a foul. Goal kick is enough.

The answer is obvious. It is a "collision". Both GK and F are equidistant from the ball when it lands. Both have an equal right to the ball. The GK very clearly seeks to shield himself from contact. His body language clearly indicates that he is trying to either protect himself or avoid contact. If I were to call a foul I would in fact lean towards calling it on the forward. His actions appear to be slightly reckless. That being said I see no reason to call a foul in this instance. Play on.....

FYI - the LOTG are finite. Judgment is not.

Once again I think the spectator / fan instinct is "somebody went down, there must have been a foul"........

I have watched this video a half dozen times now and I stay with my first instinct of no foul. In fact the more I watch it the more I feel that the forward was more out of control.

Drogba is a tough call. If not for the offside, I'd probably call the goalie for a foul. His fists didn't punch within 2 feet of the ball.

Huh? Try pausing video, attacker gets to ball 6 feet in front of goalkeeper, then goalkeeper slams into him. Referee should make the call with field players at midfield and he should make the call here.

Sorry but giving a PK in this instance would be insane. Collision does not equal a foul. There is no foul here. Not even close. This is nothing more than a collision resulting from a ball lofted into the middle of two players with equal right to the ball. There is nothing in the LOTG or ATR in my judgment that would result in a foul (PK in this case) being called.

Officials don't have pause on the field. The best way to analyze these videos is to watch at full speed once and then react. That is what we have to do on the field. We don't have the luxury of looking at it in slo mo or over and over.

My gut tells me - no foul - play on.

                              1) Stop saying "play on". That is that advantage signal. sheesh.
                              2) OK, ref doesn't have replay. too bad. I do. Am I also supposed to run a couple of miles and be in oxygen debt, screened by players and my own sweat, before I'm allowed to watch the video? Just because the ref MUST make a decision real time, that doesn't mean others can't make a more informed one using better tools. It's not insulting to the ref, it's simply acknowledging reality. sheesh.
                              3) If you kick at the ball, but i move it with my foot before you get to it, and you end up kicking my leg...foul on you. Same with a punch. He didn't TRY TO punch Drogba, but he DID punch Drogba. Foul.

Try this. Become a referee. Do about 1,000 games and then get back to me.

FYI -so if a player steps in front of a hard clear, falls down and gets knocked out by the defenders foot - the defender should be punished? Sorry does not work that way.

A goal keeper has the right to go after a ball (with limits) and if they are punching the ball out and an offensive player gets his head in beween the ball and the punch out - there is no foul on the GK. So long as the GK was actually attempting to clear the ball.

The posts by the non-officials in here are very revealing about why there is so much dissent on the sidelines. There are far too many parents/fans/spectators who do not understand how officials handle a soccer match.

I am beginning to think that every club parent should be forced to attend a one hour clinic about the LOTG and learn about the nuances of how officials handle a game.
