    Heel Pain - Sever's Disease

My child seems to run perfeclty well while playing. It is after the games when the limping starts, and the pain seems to be localized to both heels.

I've seen stories about Sever's Disease, and I imagine this could be the problem.

Does anyone have experience with this type of heel pain, and what did you do to mitigate the problem? Is it insole inserts? Heel cups? Would better soccer boots solve some of the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

first, please see an orthopedic doctor to make sure it's not something like a stress fracture or other problem.

severs symptoms can be helped with heel cups, turf shoes, ice, stretching and rest.

Growing pains often manifest themselves in kids feet. Ice, aspirin, rest, and wearing soft turf shoes as much as possible all helped my kids get through this phase.

He who butchers an adage looks pretty foolish too.

Would your child be in the 10 - 13 age group? This is pretty common for this group. It seems related to a growth spurt. For some reason, cleats makes the situation worse. Switch to turf shoes and you will find that in most cases the pain goes away and stays away. My kid wore turf shoes all the time for about a year and then was eventually able to return to wearing cleats. And no I didn't go to a doctor for advice. Somehow my kid survived and is not a cripple at age 18.

This is a very common problem with boys ages 9-12 and is typically associated with a growth spurt and continous impact to the heels. You can address the symptoms (pain) with the various aforementioned remedies but only time will heal it (no pun intended). Based on what doctors have told us (after MRIs etc confirming Sever's) you cannot worsen the condition by playing so use common sense to reduce pain and be patient. For some boys we know the condition has passed quickly (a couple of months) while others suffered for well over a year. The good news is that it will pass.

Bingo on the age. It doesn't effect play at all. I'll look to turf shoes and see what that does.

                Thanks.

I like to come to this board for all of my medical needs. Today I have been experiencing chest pain, my left arm is numb and I taste copper in my mouth. Does anybody have any advice on what I should do?

                      LOL!!

One has to wonder how any of us ever survived our childhood without running to a doctor for every little bump and scratch. I guess the difference is having or not having common sense and today very few seem to have an ounce of common sense. Lots of high level degrees, but no common sense.

                        severs disease

My son struggled with this for close to a year. For him, after he tried to play through it, we ended up having him rest for a period of almost 2 months. I also bought him insoles from a place called nxtmile.com, which you can get either from their website or soccer.com. The suggestion of using turf shoes is also a good one.

Dif go to a orthoped or sports med person. My daughter had similar symptoms and it was achilies(SP) issues that required more stretching. My daughter was 11 when she started with the symptoms. All better now.

no need to see a doctor, that stuff happens all the time at your age. take some tums as the chest pain is just heartburn. motrin and an ace bandage for the arm. use strong mouthwash, brush your teeth and then take a long nap.

yes yes yes.....and after the nap, if you wake up you will probably feel better. If you don't wake up, then we will feel better......just kidding.
