Originally posted by Unregistered View PostCongratulations Mr Nipmuc. This shows several important things:
1) Your defense is coming around for the playoffs
2) As we watch teams like Hopkinton/Holliston/Dracut handle Cmass best soccer teams, we need to realize that none of those teams are in the Globe top 20, so whoever represents Cmass this year is going to have a tough game with EMass if they get that far. That includes you too Algonquin, as it would appear you are no better that the best Div2 Cmass teams. It will be interesting to see if GD can play with Chelmsford this week. Hopefully all their horses will play.
3) Algonquin doesn't have much of an offense, getting one goal against a Div2 team from CMass.
2) It's been stated over and over that Boys Cmass D1 is weak, so no surprise to hear that tope D2 and D3 teams would be as good as Algonquin. The problem for all of those teams is a lack of good competition, so it's great they get to play each other.
3) Before the season, it was projected Algonquin would be using the coaches Freshman son as a striker. That seems to be the case, and having watched him squander quite a few opportunities against Milford, it's obvious that being young and inexperienced with the HS game is somewhat of a negative for him if he's playing strong teams. Luckily Gonk's gotten goals from plenty of midfielders, again, against not-very-strong competition.
4) One more thing, it's likely Gonk will be a much less skilled team next year. I hope people won't spend all their time knocking them. It's just the natural order of things - some years better than others. Good luck to all teams.

There are 4 districts. North, South, Central and West.
North and south have 30 D1 teams each. Central 19 and West 17. You would HOPE based on the odds that the "East" would come up with state champs. Only they don't. with 60 of the100 teams, they have only captured 2 of the titles this century.
2000 Ludlow
2001 St. John's (Shrewsbury)
2002 St. John's (Shrewsbury)
2003 Ludlow
2004 Algonquin/BC High cochamps
2005 Algonquin
2006 St. John's (Danvers)
2007 St. John's (Shrewsbury)
2008 Ludlow

To be completely honest I thought last nights game was the best soccer Algonquin has played this year. They had some really nice movement, but their finishing was wasteful. Not saying there the best team in the world, but for people to jump to all of these conclusions that they don't stand a chance out of league based on one draw is a little rediculous. The team is still 13-0-1. May I remind oyu that Ludlow just lost to a 2 win Westborough team. Algonquin was missing their starting keeper and center back who are both out with injuries. Great game by the Nipmuc keeper and great game by both teams.

I still think the team has a great chance to be state champs this year - or it could go horribly wrong, as it has done the past few years. Depends what team shows up on the night, right?

Gonk SHOULD be good. SHOULD be destroying teams given the numbers of top senior players the team has. That's not happening. If you were at the Milford game, I hope you'll agree with me that it mostly consisted of boring back and forth with a few terrible shots on net by the Gonk freshman striker. Lucky seniors were there to score the goals. I'm sure he'll get better as the years pass, but he'll be doing it with fewer strong players around him. Gonk has not had to worry about strong defense or a great keeper this year, from what I can see, so I don't think missing the goalie or a giant ctr back made much of a difference. The backup goalie is very good.
