Didn't see who played for them last night but I wouldn't be shocked if some kids who don't play as much played more last night. I have seen the Gonk play before and they are hard workers but their touch is needlessly to say lacking. That being said, so are most high school kids' touches.

      Example Recent JV game.

A Varsity player playing down on the JV team 5 minutes left in the game 1-0 gonk. Puts the ball down for a goal kick steps to the side and starts to tie his shoe. Amazingly the gonk ref says nothing.
Not sure why you bring the whole v player playing down thing. This player is not really a v quality player (did have the JV goal, though), that's why he's getting time playing JV. Agree that the tying shoe thing is ridiculous and he should have been carded for time wasting. On the other hand, we're really getting to see the lack of quality coming up through the Gonk.

Nope - according to the local paper goals from 2 seniors, and 2 from the coaches son, who would be getting playing time no matter what grade he's in. HS soccer is just pretty crappy. It's the whole "play for your school & your community" thing that saves it.

Well, as far as "just going through the motions," what do you expect? There is no competition in Cmass, no reason for the Gonk to have to try very hard. Don't know if the other leagues are as weak, but if so, these games really aren't worth going to. Way worse than town soccer. At least teams were arranged according to ability/record in BAYS.

The kid is the 1st or 2nd leading scorer on the team. I think he deserves to play. Just another Algonquin parent taking a cheap shot.

He is a good player but he gets more play time than any other striker and has a quite a talented group feeding him the plays. Good player not the superstar his dad makes him out to be.

Another likely comment from a coaches family. Who else would use this qualifier:

"who would be getting playing time no matter what grade he's in."

No objective observer would ever make a comment like that. There is a motive in that qualifier and that is to justify the amount of playing time the player receives. A statement like that comes from someone close to the family or player. If you haven't figured it out yet a lot of coaches and their families come on this site. They all claim they don't but they do. They often malign parents and play the victim.

From what I hear the boy is a good player. I am sure that he is treated differently than everyone else on that team. Statistically I see he is one of the top scorers but I know my son for one would have loved to have had that team playing balls into him. When your dad is your coach, there is no fear of coming off the field for a mistake or two, three or four. When you know this you play differently.

Situations like this are only good for the boy and not the team. Some coaches see that while other are blinded.

I am not even a "Gonk" parent. I am not a "Gonk" hater either. I have always kind of marveled at Gonk's consistency. My son was a "Panther" and he played for Bishop. Bishop would never do this to his team.

Why do schools even allow this to happen - no parent should be coaching a varsity program that their child is involved in. It is a disaster waiting to happen. Your telling me their were not other coaches available for a winning program?

I guess if it's good enough for the MNT, it's good enough for Algonquin. But it does make tryouts a sham, because everyone knows even before anyone steps foot on the field who the no-brainers to make the team are (and not because they're the best players, either). This is why so many Gonk supporters miss JF. He always tried to include as many of the older good players possible, so the school had proper v, jv & freshmen programs. Now it's a complete mess. Younger kids thinking they're better than they are, older ones not able to play with kids their own age they know are really good. But I'm sure the coaches son is having a good time.

And people wonder why everyone hates Algonquin. You Algonquin people just do not get it. None of you get it. You really don't. That's why you are called the bubble people.

I've got an idea for a new reality series. Instead of the Housewives of OC or NJ, let's have "The soccer parents of Southboro".
