The GotSocer points for the Maple season is pretty funny. Just looked at the U13G age group and they rewarded some D2 and D3 teams more points than the D1 teams. I guess this back fired for some coaches this year that chase these points. Nothing against these D2 or D3 teams but some points were over 1000 points. GotSoccer points are the biggest joke for power ranking in the country.

Noone is participating in Maple to chase point. The amount of points is minimal for everyone. Read the point distribution rules and you will see how they work. It is actually pretty smart in that you really can't chase points by playing in a league or tournament that is a sure thing. That doesn't mean that the system is perfect and it certainly doesn't mean that there aren't strong teams with a small amount of points. It all has to do with the amount of travel a team does and with ECNL and other tournaments that don't use GotSoccer, this all becomes even less useful. -

This site is "Mathman." And it has not been updated since October 2010. No one really knows who he is or why he started this, but the guess is that he is in the Northeast and has a daughter in the current U18 age group. He only tracked what are now U17 and U18 ages, although at one time he was looking to add-in the next year or two as well. I am sure his methodology was not perfect, but he tried to evaluate each game a team played using an algorithim that awarded points or took away points based on values/points of teams played and results of each game. Tournaments were not worth any more or less than any other game played so there was a sense of a better point system.Originally posted by Unregistered View Post
GotSoccer does not award points for every game, only tournaments and leagues that are either on its system or that the tournament or league provides standings to them. GS awards points relative to competition as well. The flaw most people see with GS is that many of the results/points awarded seem to be mathmatically flawed, but their algorithism seems to have more variables than their basic explanation states and therefore it appears to create flaws. IMO the biggest issue with GS is two fold - first the ratings points awarded for the most part are only carried for 12 months so there are effectively changes every day instead of at timed intervals and often points are awarded well after events are completed and often well after points going into an event have been dropped (eg. a bracket of teams ranked #13, 20, 54 and 83 and a value of 7,000 points might end up becoming a value of only 3,000 points after the prior year results are dropped from those teams before the current year results are valued).
Neither is/was perfect, but they both do/did a reasonable job of creating relative values and rankings.Comment
