For the first time ever I saw in shape refs at all three of my daughter's U18 games. Basically you didn't notice them - which in my mind usually means they are good - they're not either overcalling and running way behind the play or you're not looking for them repeatedly to make a call they've missed again.

I did watch a GU17 game where the center ref had had more than a few too many twinkies and as a result missed calls then made others in a very uneven performance.

If MYSA is going to assign younger refs - male or female - they should assign them to younger age groups. The best refs should be assigned to the oldest age groups regardless of sex (of either the ref or the teams).

And no just because you have a U16 boy doesn't mean you get the best refs.

Ooooh, you are jumping to conclusions. I did not mean to imply this though in re-reading my post I can see why you did. So, for the record, I think younger refs should be assigned to younger games. Older, more experienced (and please, please, please) in shape refs should be assigned to the older games. This girl was mis-matched with the team because she was too young and intimidated before the game even began. Let her ref younger games, gain experience and confidence, and then unleash her on older age groups.

Thanks - I'm glad it was just a misunderstanding. Since both genders of the age group typically played at the same time this weekend I did jump to the conclusion (based also on years of watching MYSA in action on this front).

What MYSA might have been trying to do was to give this young ref experience while she had solid backup on the sides. If that is the case, that was a good plan, which sadly did not work in practice.

IT NEVER WORKS. But year in and year out you will see MYSA "showcase" their "best" young refs at the SC. It is part of the mind-set problem with these people and evidence of their belief that the organization is more important than the component parts (players, coaches, parents and refs). It will get worse at the semis-finals and finals because there are fewer games and there is no reason for it. There are enough quality refs to do those games, but, Mass Youth will still assign younger refs (under 18) into games that are yet capable of handling. Here is a novel idea, let these kids become proficient players before becoming refs. Learn a player's feel and understanding for the game and then when they "retire" from playing begin your career as a ref. That is what happens in EVERY other sport.

Do that in an NEP or MAPLE DIV II or III game, not at State Cup.

hahaha - it would have worked but I think they forget to tell the center that she was supposed to pay attention to the side refs!!
