    Round Robin Review and Requiem

A few thoughts on this weekend’s RR:

First, what was the real story behind the change of dates? Two likely factors emerged and both seem plausible. Mass Youth certainly felt pressure from R1 to get things done earlier and not delay the release of the Regional brackets. Apparently some of the R1 higher-ups blame that delay on the embarrassing number of teams that decided not to go to West Virginia last year. Additionally, insiders admitted that it was becoming organizationally impossible to stage the SC RR on the same weekend as prelims for the Andre and Irwin Cups. So it made sense on both fronts to move the RR up two weeks, MYSA could appease R1 and avoid the logistical nightmares of previous years in Lancaster by having U11s to U19s on the same site on the weekend after Memorial Day.

I’ll admit that logistically the weekend went off pretty flawless. There were none of the parking, weather, field space or ref issues of previous years. But the smaller participant/team numbers also meant that the event lacked that festival/tournament feel of past RRs. In fact, it felt like any other fully-scheduled weekend at Lancaster. Lots of soccer but nothing special. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking for a return of the U-littles, as I understand that it would be extremely difficult (if not practically impossible) to have everyone competing on the same weekend at this site – but those crazy days of the past did have some appeal and it was missed.

There were also lots of whispers about the growing animosity between the USYSA and the ECNL. Rumors were that the decision to require ECNL teams to not display their ECNL badges on uniforms came directly from the USYSA National HQ. Scorpions donned florescent green Ts to avoid showing their ECNL membership, Stars covered their patches with tape. Overall it was a petty decision, but the bigger issue is what that decision represents, and that is an open antagonism towards the ECNL and maybe a desire to force a show-down next year? Even if ECNL clubs do decide to continue to play in the SCs this wasn’t a good sign.

My guess is that the Stars will not send their top U15-17 girls teams into the RR next year. That is only three teams , and might represent only a single defending State Champ, but it is symbolic of the change in youth soccer. The boys divisions are already watered down by the absence of the DAP teams In any respect, this may be the end of an era for the Mass SC RR.

After this scathing review, I'm glad we have one year remaining. It's been a fun ride.

maybe if US Soccer didn't bury their head in the sand, they would have all these competing leagues.

State Cup ought to always be an open competition.... period. US Soccer made a mistake excluding DAP teams. By doing so they watered down their own National championship, and also provided the unintended consequence of laying out an exclusive path which ECNL has followed. Sure, ECNL or DAP teams would likely triumph, but the chance of upsets, and opportunity for other teams to challenge themselves against the best far outweighs any negatives. Seed these teams later in the process if necessary, but keep them included.

Bolts boy's teams are missed. I always enjoyed watching them compete. Stars and Scorps will be even a bigger loss next year on the girls side. Here's hoping they don't yank their ECNL sides.

The logo situation is petty. Here's hoping the various entities get together and work for the betterment of US soccer, not their personal fiefdoms.

The back lot was a great addition.

        The weather held.

All in all a great weekend.

MYSA and USYSA are just trying to protect their phony balony jobs.

            RR

            Parking situation vastly improved.

Fileds great shape considering the rain for the past week.

Refs did a great job in all three games.

Medical staff on site within few minutes of injury

            Scores posted quickly/frequently.

No apparent glitches, no complaints here.

Again rumor had it that it was not the MYSA Staff that initaited the "NO ECNL Patch" rule, but like all rumors maybe it was wrong and this was actually a petty thing by someone in the Mass Youth Office... and nothing more.

Agreed it was a great weekend. Fortunately the weather cooperated despite the forecasts.

Two errors in your commentary - The change in dates was due to coordinating schedules with ODP State Tournament at Rider. Too many clubs did not allow their players to compete in Rider the weekend between RR and semis/finals, so MYSA finally scheduled SC to be complete the weekend before Rider. Good for the high school kids as well as to SAT/ACT and final exam schedules. Scorpions changed to the neon jerseys for all competitions in R1, NEP etc, not just SC.

Lastly, what was with the referees this weekend? The amount of terrible calls was appalling. Inconsistent and just plain silly calls including calls that took away goals, scoring opportunities, gave scoring opportunities and did not control excessive force in several fouls. Have not seen these issues all spring and suddenly at SC every game I saw had referee issues.

Didn't realize Cujo was involved in so many games. You have our sympathies. The waistline is only dwarfed by the ego.

I didn't see Scorps in neon jerseys, only neon tape over the ECNL patches on their black and whites. Heard many officials talking to Scorps and Stars girls/coaches and managers telling them to get their patches covered up. Even heard that the tape was not allowed to be peeling off.... Really? They had nothing better to do then worry about peeling tape and making sure that young girls covered up the league they play in? Ridiculous..... It made Mass Youth look petty and stupid. Made parents question why they bother with Mass Youth anymore. A bunch of egos picking on what young girls wear... Seems to me they are shooting themselves in the foot.

couldn't agree more. we had a teenage girl center reff'ing our boys u16 game - she had zero control and looked scared before she even stepped on the field. she made a series of disastrous calls, both ways, and ignored her ref pals holding down the sides. sorry but you can't put a teenage girl in the middle of a boys u16 game who wallets onto the field like she's headed to the guillotine.
