cobra kii what club do you coach with since you like us to think that you know so much about soccer why not at least tell us what club you are with but im not saying you have to give away your identify by saying the ages or gender but it would give you a credibility where right now you are anonymous and its hard to take you sreious because of thatComment

At some level, development and success (measured in the form of wins, State Cup championships, etc.) merge - the former leads to the latter. The problem isn't the desire to win, the problem is the grossly disproportionate weight given to winning - particularly in the early years (in my opininon - pre U-15). But then again, clubs are businesses and if you want to remain viable, winning becomes paramount. Vicious circle.
As a parent of a U-13 boy, I want to see success. It validates the hard work these kids put in, as opposed to say sitting in front of an X-box all day fine tuning their fine motor skills.
So the condescension and patronizing comments we routinely see on this site are both naive and short-sighted. I want my son's team (and club) to succeed, I just don't want winning to become the sole or even primary objective.
The best coaches focus on development, but also value "wins." They're both important, but finding the right balance between the two is the tough part. So, in the end, it comes down to balance which given the OP's Cobra Kai pseudonym is appropriate in a Karate Kid kind of way~

Parents of losing teams take odd comfort in "development" which is being shoved down their collective throat by dream peddling, unqualified coaches. It is almost as if these two are mutually exclusive. It is ok to win as Odie points out. Many of you fraud parents will leave the fields this weekend quietly miserable that your kid's team didnt win and then will deluge this board and accuse the winning teams of only caring about winning - only because they won. Then you'll cut a huge check to repeat the cycle for next season never once taking notice that your kid and his/her team arent very good. You'll swallow some force fed concept that the child is "developing" and one day will be like those kids/teams that you rip on here because they won. The joke is on you parents.
