    Twellman Article - Concussions

Terrific article in yesterday's Boston Globe re: Twellman's problems with concussions as well as others:

    http://www.boston.com/sports/soccer/...ety_of_soccer/

Being the parent of a young grade school player - I am curious what other people think about some type of protective gear for the head? My daughter played in a tournament recently where the other team all wore some kind of protection that looked like headbands.

Are those effective? Is it a waste of money? Anything better out there?

And for those of you who like to change the tone of the thread quickly... I understand that soccer is a contact sport. And that you can never eliminate the possibility of getting hurt, concussed, etc... And I am not one of those parents who thinks their kids need to be wrapped up in bubble wrap! I am simply interested in minimizing injury if it can be done so without impacting the play of the game.

Another long thread about this was on here a month or so ago. Look back in the archives.

What's the evidence that it "works"?

Thanks. I just read through the entire thread. Bottom line - everything sounds inconclusive re: the use of either headgear or mouthguards with regard to concussions. It may or may not be helpful and it all depends on circumstances.

It will certainly be interesting in the coming years to see the evolution of this issue and whether more and more players wear headgear and/or mouthgards.
