If your son is looking at D3 and doesn't need admissions help then he'll be fine.

Find a school he likes. If he's good enough to play he can tryout as a walkon and wont have much disadvantage vs recruited athletes.

Actually for one of the D3 schools, his GPA and SAT scores are the average scores needed to get into the college. Hopefully soccer can change that.
