              Brown 2 BC 1

You can watch these games on the home school's web site's video. This game was free to watch. Brown played it's tough defensive system and strangled BC. BC got ugly with 2 yellows and a red late.

I was at the Brown-BC game, too. I was surprised how ineffective BC was for a team that was ranked #1 at one this fall.

BC completely lost their composure in the last 10 minutes, resorting to chippy play rather than focusing on trying to tie the game. #10 really hurt the team by losing his cool and getting carded, then ultimately red-carded. You'd think these guys would understand that they weren't going to win by committing fouls.

BC Men were never ranked #1, the women were.

                        Dartmouth over ND

Five of the six Big East teams are out starting the third round. Only Louisville remains.

My son and I made the drive on Rte 6 to Storrs today to watch one of the most exciting soccer matches I've ever seen. Short story, Brown won after 7 rounds of pk's to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Long story....Brown scores 10 minutes into the match on a counter-attack. Newly haircutted Taylor Gorman with the hard low strike from just outside the 18. UConn waited until 3 minutes left in regulation when they scored to equalize 1-1.

Brown keeper - and my son's hero - Paul Grandstrand made 3 eye-popping saves during the game. That guy is great.

No goals in OT. PK's go 7 rounds, each keeper makes a save in the first 5. 7th UConn shooter skies his shot, Brown makes theirs, game over.

Brown plays the winner of UC-Santa Barbara/Cal net Sunday. Doubtful we'll make that trip :)

Very interesting contrast in styles. UConn had the better, stronger and faster athletes, especially their forwards - they gave Brown defenders fits whenever they got the ball. But they played such a slow possession style that took so long to build up, they didn't take advantage of their clear speed advantage up front as often as they could have. They spent way too much time holding the ball in their own end. They should have been more aggressive attacking.

Brown played looking for a counter-attack and made the most of their chances by sending balls over the top, trying to get numbers. FYI - Brown star forward Jon Okafor was slowed some by a leg injury. But, boy, those Brown kids play hard! IMO, shear will and effort kept them in the game.

I think this was the 4th time I've seen Brown play this year. Today was well worth the $6 ticket price and a $2 cup of hot chocolate.

Are Providence and Hartford the ONLY major/semi-major cities in the world not connected by a real highway?

                            Round 3

So Brown and Dartmouth depart, losing 2-0 to Cal and 2-1 in DOT to UCLA. I guess they didn't travel well, although the later game was quite competitive. So I guess the NE will watch the remaining 8 determine this year's champion.

The one NE team that really looked to have national caliber players was UConn. Unfortunately, they did not seem to be able to turn all that talent into goals against quality opposition. Too bad.
