Anyway you overrating Donovan by suggesting he is top 50 in world becasue he may have been voted top 50 wc 10. Which I don't think agrees with my understanding of what I saw in wc 10, but that is neither here nor there.

I do think he was contributing at Everton in his mid late twenties which I think is a good start for US soccer. And you're right he is back at LAG, so I am behind the times there sorry about that.

Anyway, I think it's kind of interesting to talk about Donovan in the context of gender neutral qualities regarding soccer because here is one that both men and women can possess equally: mental toughness.

Earlier I mentioned the horrible dish off with US hopes of getting into round of 16 on the line in '06. That was a play where a much younger Donovan was completely intimidated by his surroundings and made a bad choice on the field which I don't think other players coming from other non-us club development systems would have made. The idea of Marta passing off in that context is completely incomprehensible (I also don't think Donovan would do that now, 4 years later).

But to people who sneer at women playing soccer, I think you should open your eyes a little and appreciate the great qualities of the game wherever they may be expressed.

And this could lead to a whole 'nother discussion on how the US Club system propogates mentally wimpy players who have to be on elite teams beating competition 8-0 all the time or else they run away and think that the effort isn't worth it....but that's for another thread.

I think it is important to define the term 'World Class' because I think a discrepancy in our definition is causing a lot of our argument.
