I have also enjoyed watching this player and her sister develop and play over the years. Both are great examples of what can happen if you have talent and desire, plus you are willing to work very hard to learn the fine points of the game.

All of us in Massachusetts should be proud of and support the successful players from our state.

Good luck in college. I know it will go very well.

It just proves that anyone on any given day can win.

Really? Is that a "professional" judgment, or merely a parochial one?

I certainly wish her luck in whatever she does, as I would even the mediocre players, as I hope you would. It is interesting to hear comments from outsiders and from those that claim to know her dad i.e. insiders...perhaps on the Scorpions. I am not sure what to make of it when a Scorpion parent says that a fellow Scorpion parent is 'kind and unassuming'. You are all a bit crazy over your girls soccer program.

As for the successful players from Massachusetts, good luck to all, but (and don't be offended) I am not seeing why we need to 'be proud of and support the successful players from out state'. Do you mean you want us to pay more for the clubs than we already do? Do you mean I should walk around talking about this particular girl or similar peers?? I am not sure why 'all of Massachusetts' needs to be involved in this one. When the Stars girls beat the Scorpions are you proud of them? It would seem from many posts that there is a bitterness between the two that leads to some less than supportive posts.

Regardless....I do hope this girl and many others from Massachusetts do well. Success, in fact, increases the notoriety of the state and brings more interested coaches in to observe.
What I do wonder, however, is what will happen at UCLA if her soccer career doesn't go well, or, like 99% of college players, ends at UCLA. Although I am guessing, the Scorpion and Stars parents of girls teams, based on these threads, seem very very obsessed with their soccer as if there was nothing else but winning games. I do hope, for their kids sake, that they are prepared to lose and face adversity......and are able to succeed in something other than soccer.......

          Good luck to all.

Just want to know what you have against her Father. He is one of the nicest men I have met --always had something nice & encouraging to say my daughter whenever he saw her. I think he is a class act

Different club parent here. Didn"t see the game but SM and my daughter have been causal friends for years, She has only been nice to my daughter and her parents have only been friendly to me as well. If she cried after the game I assume it was the same tears of frustration opponents fans would see from her on occasion. Do not make a mountain out of a molehill and assassinate a 17 year old's character with your assumptions. She's only 17 and finally has been able to devote herself entirely to the hs season and they go out early in an upset - right after the U20 WNT team doesn't qualify. Upsetting year for this kid - give her a break.

The best part of this news is how it will affect the D1 North champion. Go North!

That said the WH coach has gained PR advantages for himself and his players with his obvious connections to the Eastern mass soccer coaches and the Globe and coach of the year and player of the year accolades when the team didn't win eastern mass which is unusual. If

And if she didn't cry they would have said she didn't care.

Just some perspective. The Number 1 seed in D1 or D2 South has lost 3 times in the first round... in the last 5 years. That is 30% - which is not insignificant. W/H has been the South D1 top seed four of the last five years. Interesting that their best tournament performance (last year's south title) came in the lone year they were not #1? In that same period, no #1 seed in the North D1 or D2 has lost in the first round. But there have been three losses in the second round (1 more than in the South). So early round "upsets" - even big upsets - aren't entirely uncommon. I don't think there can be any doubt that W/H was a bit overated all season - as a team. No doubt the enormous (and deserved) respect that Mewis carries played a part in that. But they did win some big games against some good teams, so this isn't a situation where they played an absolute cream-puff schedule and would not have been praised for their regular season results. Please understand, the tournament is a zero sum game. It is one and out, and these are young players. Lots can happen and usually does. That is why it is so exciting. But given the right situation any team CAN (and sometimes does) beat any other team. I've watched a lot of girls tournament action during the last decade, and the one thing that has been most consistent is that the state's best teams rarely win a MIAA title. The team that wins all their games in these two and 1/2 weeks does. That isn't the same thing.

What Era? Plenty of high school players contribute to their team every year with little recognition for it. She is a very good player with a terrible attitude that is very evident when she loses. I have seen her plenty and I would never consider her great--does not have the good sportsmanship of a truly great player.
How about talking about the Great game Silver Lake played and give them the credit they earned.

I know and care little about this player. But, please, save the "sportsmanship" bromides for rec leagues. Being a great player has little do with sportsmanship--as anyone who has been around or played with high-level athletes could tell you.

IF this was a "high-level" event, then you would possibly be right but this is high school

"Within high school sport programs, young people learn the values associated with discipline, performing under stress, teamwork, sacrifice, commitment, effort, accountability, citizenship, sportsmanship, confidence, leadership and organizational skills, participating within rules, physical well-being and healthy lifestyles, striving towards excellence, and many other characteristics that come quickly to the mind of any educator. If interscholastic athletics are to be justified as school activities, then values such as these must be the priorities of every program. Ethics, playing within the spirit of the rules, and good sportsmanship (which is good citizenship) must be woven into the fabric of the high school athletic program."
