The advice being touted above is not excellent, because the problem is with the parents and the kid's selection process. Parents don't ask questions they don't want to hear, so you only hear this stuff after the fact, after disappointments to which they are not entitled. And parents also don't hear everything that is said to them by the coach. They leave with the words they want to parse out and hear. Parents get entirely focused on "tips" and "support" at the highest possible tier school their kid can get into. When they think they hear the magic words, they tune everything else out because all they really want (at the time) is to hear the big YES. Parents and kid can then bask together in the glow of acceptance, and I mean 'acceptance' in every way and on every level. Parents, intentionally, and not as a function of ignorance or sloppiness, do NOT ask how many frosh are coming in, how hard the academics will be if your kid is in the lower 3rd of the class, how many kids stopped playing after sophomore year, etc, etc, because they are focused on the immediate prize. EVERYTHING hangs in the balance waiting for the acceptance letter from dear old Mr. NESCAC.

As said by previous posters; do your homework, ask questions, ideally get to see the coach actually coach a few games or training sessions, watch how existing players react to them (that will tell you a lot), and consider academics/geography/etc.

Certainly not exhaustive, but presents a range of schools and backgrounds. Did not include rostered kids who have not played in more than 1-2 games (and who may be injured). Clubs not listed except where knew affiliated with DAP. Additions/revisions welcome.

I don't think I was looking for any conclusions, but I do think some impressions can be offered. First, though, as other posters have stated, congrats to the players and those affiliated with them.
There appear to be 10 DAP players on the list (out of 99-100), 3 of whom were 2010s. Two other prominent non-DAP 2010s are on the list. For the most part, these players getting substantial playing time, starting a high number of games, and in general one would assume making a considerable contribution on their teams. This should be no surprise, right? The DAP players also seem to have a similar distribution in terms of elite D3 vs. the less known and state school-type D3s.
There are a good number of non-DAP players, most with strong club backgrounds, making very similar impacts, at least in terms of playing time, starts, points, etc, including at schools equal to or in the same ballpark as the DAP players at more elite schools. Given the level of competition out there, including DAP recruits from other states, and just the difficulty of making some of these higher-end rosters, I would suggest that this group is doing surprisingly well.
The most interesting group may be the group that never gets talked about much in this forum, and that is the more urban, I'm guessing, mostly non-club group. Many of these kids are experiencing success on their college teams. The UMass-Boston and UMass-Dartmouth teams are good examples. For these kids, high school soccer obviously is critical and appears to do the trick.
Finally, given that the list was not exhaustive, we can conclude that there are well over 100 MA 2011 kids playing D3 alone. I'm guessing the total number inclusive of D1 and D2 is around 150 (+/- 10 to 15). The most prominent names come from DAP and the top high-end non-DAP clubs, partly because of familiar soccer circles and things like this forum, and this group does correlate with the more talked-about, elite schools, but the majority is populated outside of this group. In other words, the 100 names are not right off the DAP rosters and rosters of the top 4 club teams. There are lots of players from especially the club teams who do not appear to be playing at all.

The other interesting thing in terms of the data is that I think high school plays a larger role for a large segment of kids than most give credit for. For some, it clearly was their avenue, and even for some higher end club players high school gave them an opportunity to play a lead role, gain confidence, be a leader, be a late bloomer, etc, etc. High school may not have facilitated skill for that group, but may have played a major role in teaching how to compete and to play in college which is basically high-end high school soccer on steroids.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostNot a DAP family, but I don't believe the data points towards this. In fact, I think the data shows the majority of the DAP players have done well whether D1, D2 or D3 as far as playing time. Remember in these statistics you don't know who has been/still is injured, or who is a reserve behind an all-conference upper classman....ect....the more telling statistic will be how many of these same players (100+DAP and non-DAP) will still be on rosters and playing their junior year, especially in D3 where there is no $$$ incentive component at all. All in all it is impressive so many Mass players HS Class of 2011 are rostered/playing in college. Good luck to all.
