Looks like on Saturday that things will be wet. Maybe not constant rain but off and on with some heavy downpours and possible T Storms. It is in respect to T-storms that Lancaster fails compared to U Mass. At U Mass there was plenty of nearby shelter. In Lancaster there is basically none. Plus half the folks can't even get to their cars easily. This could be trouble!!

That's a very good point. But I'd question you comment, "half the folks can't even get to their cars easily". It will be more like nobody will be able to get to their car easily. Whether parked in the main parking lot or at the flea market, there are going to be a lot of people exposed to potentially dangerous weather if the forecast comes to pass.

This was posted on the "other" forum.... not a bad idea to remind all what to do if there is lightining........

Weather calls for a chance of thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon. In the past, people went to the protected concession area. Last time this happened, there were only ten or so games going on, and the area was packed.

If there is a lightning storm, here are suggestions from http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_pls/lst.html

          2. IF OUTDOORS...Avoid water. Avoid the high ground. Avoid open spaces. Avoid all metal objects including electric wires, fences, machinery, motors, power tools, etc. Unsafe places include underneath canopies, small picnic or rain shelters, or near trees. Where possible, find shelter in a substantial building or in a fully enclosed metal vehicle such as a car, truck or a van with the windows completely shut. If lightning is striking nearby when you are outside, you should:

          A. Crouch down. Put feet together. Place hands over ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder.

          B. Avoid proximity (minimum of 15 ft.) to other people. (not sure how this can be avoided as there will be people everywhere),

It's not looking good for Saturday. Will the new grass fields hold up or will they even risk twelve hours of play on them?

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8am, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly between 11am and noon, then showers, mainly between noon and 4pm. High near 72. South wind between 7 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

I am worried about where everyone will go if there is lightning.

Here's an MCAS question for next years math portion

If Massachusetts Youth soccer holds its Annual Round Robin State cup tournament at their 16 fields in Lancaster, and each field has 1 center ref and 2 linesmen. While each team has 18 players and 2 coaches, Each player has 3 family members watching. Answer the following
How many parking spots do they need?
How much shelter if there is lightening?
How many customers could the snack bar really handle before they run out of everything
How long until the bathrooms are over worked?
And is Mass Youth Soccer really ready for this?

at least 688 then add 688 x 2 for hangers on and game turnover (around 2,064)
                more than they have
it will be overwhelmed by noon 12:30
fingers crossed and breath is held
I guss we will find out!

                Good Luck everyone!

                  Re: State Cup Weekend Weather

The one good bit of news is that maybe - just maybe people will leave right after their last games if the weather isn't good so there will be a bit of parking opening up for the late games.

Teams playing at 5:30 will have no problems parking. Teams with 4 pm games will have the most because of all those U11 fans.

                    Re: State Cup Weekend Weather

The potential for lightning and where to go at Lancaster is a big problem. Some forecasts are calling for a potential cell of "severe" weather Saturday afternoon. We need to hear from MA Youth soccer about how they are going to get all those people sheltered.

                      How many parking spots do they need? . . . . .
I would work it out this way:
Start with some assumptions; not every team carries 18 on the roster and some coaches are also dad's. I'm also going to assume that all the family members will come in one car. So my assumption is that each team will have 18 cars.

                      (18 cars/team x 2 teams/game) + 3 referee cars = 39 cars/game
                      39 cars/game x 16 fields = 624 cars per time slot

Now each team is usually there for 4 time slots (u12 girls play at 8:00 and 12:00 so cars will be parked for the 8:00, 9:15, 10:45 and 12:00 games) plus one time slot for teams arriving early and finished teams not leaving right away = 5 time slots.

                      624 cars/time slot x 5 time slots = 3,120 parking spots

Your estimate may be a bit high, if you account for up to 1/3 of the team carpooling, but it helps to validate the parking issue. I hadn't fully considered the impact of the game overlap (and who would want to leave and give up a spot in the lot). Ever notice that the gaps between cars at Lancaster is usually wide enough to get a half of a car in? Perhaps the attendants will enforce "tighter" parking, to squeeze more cars in. Something else to think about if the lot is ever paved (can it be paved, or is there some conservation issue with runoff to the fields?). If paved, lines can be drawn.

Tha above link is for the field map of the Lancaster fields. Am I correct that there is parking on the grassy area to the right of field 10. And how about the area just above field 9 where paths are shown thru the woods - are these paths coming from a parking area? What about at the bottom of field 11 - parking area or picninc area? I've only been to this facility once before but it was before the grass fields were completed.

What is the parking capacity at Lancaster?

Wouldn't it be better to use any grassy areas for teams to warm up rather than park more cars?

This is actually comical, if the play off's were being played at Umass, the complaining would be around the uneven, unmowed, cow pastures that would become mudpits after the rain. Just go and enjoy the soccer & the beautiful fields that Mass Youth Soccer is providing.

Good luck to everyone this weekend!!!! May the best teams win!!
