    Upcoming changes

Is it too early to ask about upcoming club changes for the 2008-2009 season? Who's coming or who's going?

    Jesus, who the eff cares?

With all the real problems we face everyday, why do we have to obsess which teenagers move to which MAPLE club?

What league? Are you hinting at something you know that most others don't? Are you referring to teams? coaches? clubs? players? As you probably know, State Cup has yet to be played. Tryouts in MAPLE cannot occur until after State Cup.

I'm wondering about coaches, not players. With tryouts coming, I figure people ought to know. We nearly got burnt in the past. Went to tryouts assuming Coach X was coaching the team only to find after tryouts, Coach X was leaving the club. One year, this happened at 2 of the 3 teams who my player tried out. Luckily my player had already made the right choice, but it was just by luck, not that the clubs informed us of the changes. Both those teams had been top division teams and 2 years later in Maple D, one about to be relegated out of the league.

After 6 years with my boy in MAPLE, as well as several years in ODP and also connections with club coaches who are also college coaches, I have come to see the apparent sudden departures and arrivals of coaches, the inconsistency and the unexpected changes as just part of what is youth soccer, at least around here. I bet that even your club didn't know that Coach X was leaving until it was a done deal, and then they had to do some scrambling. Young ambitious coaches with something to prove and resumes to build will jump ship in a minute for a better opportunity that moves them a step up the coaching ladder. Assistant Coach here to Head Coach there. Coaching in small club to coaching more teams in larger club. Head Coach college Division III to Assistant Coach Division I to Head Coach Division I. I wonder it it's like that in youth soccer all over the country, or if other areas somehow tend to get longer tenures, more youth loyalty out of their coaches???

My experience, the coach conducted the tryouts and then was fired by the club. The club's biggest rival knew he was going to be fired, but the coach did not, nor did any of the previous year's players or parents. How the rivals knew, I don't know. The soccer grapevine often knows what's going on I guess. The next year the rivals hired the coach and he went on to win at least one State Cup coaching for them.

I have more often seen coaches move on when they found an opportunity they could not pass up, than being fired, but that may just be the randomness of my own experiences.

I got one better. Take my kid to a tryout of an upper half D1 team. Kid makes the team. Kid starts practicing in August. A week before Maple season starts, coach gets fired. Parents from previous season knew it was just a matter of time and in fact had a lot to do with the firing. Right or wrong there were 4 new kids that had joined the team because of that coach. Two immediately quit, two stayed.

I heard Mission is looking for a new DOC. Who will take over the teams he coaches?

Mission has an assistant DOC so maybe he's taking over. They must be losing their GK coach too, because that was a package deal with the DOC.

I guess with experiences like this, it's understandable to ask on this forum for any inside news people might be privy to, in order not to be blindsided.
