    High School defense

With all the talk about some teams with a key midfielder or forward, why don't more teams play with a shadow on the key player and reduce the game to 9v9?

For the most part hs defense is put athletes back there and tell them to kick the ball as far as they can when they get it. Some of hte better teams play out of the back, but all in all it is bad.

        It is happening most games

Any HS defense that is facing a top forward or top attacking center mid is already double and triple teaming this player. If the player is fortunate enough to have one or more dangerous players with them then it's difficult to do, but I have seen this done (double or triple teaming/marking) a specific player every game if there is such a player on the field. It is happening all over. Allowing a very dangerous player only single coverage 1 v 1 with a defender is not a good bet. Better to allow someone else from the opposition to attempt to beat you than the star player who has shown they can and will if the opportunity presents itself.

Heard an opposing coach berate his players for not marking someone this weekend. "Are you scared?!!!! I don't care. Do whatever you have to do to take &^$#@ out of the game!"

Guess man marking isn't as easy as drawing it on the chalkboard.

Much easier to man mark a forward than it is an attacking center mid who is running all over the field if he/she is a true #10. The players who deserve such attention do not need much time or space once they recieve or win the ball and can usually score from well outside the 18 which makes them very dangerous. Not an easy task for the defender if he/she is not used to such an assignment, while the offensive player is very used to such treatment every game, thus has likely developed strategies/moves to the double teaming.
