As as observer of a senior year season I am continually amazed by the lengths that kids and parents will go in terms of grandstanding and resume primping. I have seen schools where they give out assists like hockey goals, with assists going to any player who made a pass in a string of passes that culminated in a goal (even if really an own goal). I have seen players kick balls already clearly over the line and then claim credit, taking goals away from teammates or claiming own goals while going into full celebration mode. The chase of stats and stat-padding all apparently driven by the chase for postseason accolades and late recruiting interest really are astounding. Some players probably deserve their astronomical goal/assist numbers, but I wonder if assists in particular are judged in a consistent manner across schools and leagues. Have these phenomena gone on for years?

A coach we talked to said it best. She basically said "I discount 75% all the stats and all-star accolades". She went on to say: "After 1 game I know the ral level of the kid and after 2 games I know if she can play for me." -
Know of one school this season which has 45 goals total and it's two strikers have 39 goals and 58 assists for just these 2 players. How many other assists do their remaining teammates have on these 45 goals? Crazy. I checked my HS stats and assist to goal ratio was around 75 to 85% per year. I was pretty strict on giving out assists. No intervening touch by opposing team. Only direct passes resulted in an assist. 2 assists per goal were allowed but I was a traditionalist. One per goal max. Many coaches gave out 2 assists on virtually every goal. Some parents were not happy with my scoring rules. One father of a player actually paid his daughter $100 for a goal and $50 for an assist. (School board member too..........). He would lobby me for assists at the end of the game. Her nickname on the team was the black hole. How can assists count when assists are viewed differently. 2 assists on one goal, ball hits cross bar to teammate, cross that is flicked by head to teammate, shot off keepers hand then easily put in by teammate. Get rid of assists if everyone is not on the same page.Comment

I like how the middlesex league does it ... based on where you finish in the league standings, you are awarded a certain number of all star spots. Im not positive what the actuals are, but for example, 1st place gets 5 all stars, 2nd and 3rd get 4, 4th and 5th gets 3, 6th and 7th get 2, 8th 9th and 10th get 1, its something to that effect.
Either way, no matter what the formula is it should be consistent state wide.Comment

The stats on my daughters high school team are kept by the parent of one of the girls......guess who has the most points on the team. The running joke is if she didn't actually score the goal she got the assist......whether she touched the ball or not. This parent also does the write-ups for the school and notifies the newspapers.......gee guess whose name is always mentioned in the game summaries. The number of points this kid has is unbelievable, more than double the next high points leader! It's pretty discouraging for some of the other kids on the team.Comment
