Youth soccer crowds nasty and unruly
    Some officers almost run over

LANCASTER — Competition for parking spaces is so tough during national tournaments at Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park that police officers have been threatened and almost run over by irate and aggressive youth soccer parents, the police chief said.

At the last large tournament, over the Labor Day weekend, cars were parked on both sides of Old Union Turnpike and on lawns, Police Chief Kevin D. Lamb in a said in his report to the Planning Board last night.

The 10-field soccer park has 600 spaces and could use 2,000, according to facility director Dick Threadgould.

Chief Lamb said parents were walking on Old Union Turnpike around parked cars and in the road, towing young children, strollers and large coolers.

“People are being endangered, residents are being inconvenienced. These people just don’t want to listen to us. My officers have been threatened, cursed and almost run over,” said Chief Lamb.

Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association Executive Director Mike Singleton said he agrees wholeheartedly with the chief about the parking problems and the attitudes of the parents. He told the Planning Board he is negotiating with Steven Harper and Steven Boucher, owners of abutting property, to complete a 1,400-space parking lot, ideally before the association’s first 2011 tournament in March.

He added that he will be negotiating the original 2-year-old plan, which, according to Mr. Boucher, already has Conservation Commission approval for a two-lane road with sidewalks.

“We have already spent $90,000 on plans and it is has been a growing, frustrating problem for the organization, but we’ll be talking with both Steves and this will happen by the spring,” said Mr. Singleton.

Planning Board Chairman Jeanne Rich said she wanted to shut down the field this past spring after many extensions and changes to leadership of the association, as well as changes to the parking plans.

The board’s next meeting is on Oct. 25, and Mr. Singleton and Mr. Boucher made promises to come back before the board with a plan and start date.

No surprise there, but police can nip this stuff in the bud if they want. Hand out tickets and arrest any "aggressive" parents. That ought to do it.

You know what I find annoying at Lancaster, is that the police will not let you drop off your kid and gear. I understand that there is parking issues and have no problem taking the shuttles, but it would be appreciated if we could drive in and drop off pasengers and gear before heading to the shuttle lot. I'm not condoning anyone who isn't respectful of the police officers on duty, but I can understand why some parents become irate. There really doesn't seem a good reason not to let people this.

I've lost count the number of times I've been poked by a parent carrying a lawn chair trying to load or unload on a crowded shuttle.

I was there 2 weeks ago and the cops you're paying at the entrance were both leaning against the car smoking stoggies... They don't seem to be doing their job.

Who has ever seen someone threaten a cop and get away with it? I don't believe that one, I agree I have not seen the "officers" actually do much more than watch the mayhem.

                  Poor Planning

I love Lancaster and am grateful we have it. That said, this issue is a result of poor planning from the beginning. Parking spaces and the number of fields go together. The field opening should have been staggered as more parking is made available. Or, reduce the number of fields by 1 or 2 and use that land for the needed parking.

Tons of problems all around. First off, poor planning on the designs by not making sure there is enough parking. If it happens occasionally, all right but not all the time. Fields out back are slanted so those are not necessarily great either. I have also received miscommunication from the police up there. Last year, I parked on the side of the road about 1/4 of a mile past the entrance. Officer on duty at the gate told me to park up there. I get out of my car and one of his cronies comes by and tells me I can't park there or I will get a ticket. I had to tell him to tell his buddy then to not tell people they can park on the side of the road.

On a side note, any here about how MYSA doubled the price on the field rental rate? Hopefully this will help pay for more parking.

What would happen to club soccer? It may end as we know it.

More proof that these organizations need to be run by business people who have experience in sports management.

Interesting how it was scaled back from its orginal inception. THey should have held onto the car dealership land and built parking there or moved the backfields there.

                          from 2005:

"Mass Youth originally came up with a $30m development plan that would see up to thirty fields built, with an indoor facility and possible dormitory facilities constructed too. However, it was soon agreed that such a complex was beyond what was needed and, with those initial plans shelved, Burrill admits that the board stood at a crossroads as to what it would do with the land...Burrill is aware that the association will be a little "shoehorned' in with sixteen fields and admits that parking will be an issue when the complex is fully operational. However, plans are in place to make the fields as accessible as possible for the most amount of people. Furthermore, given the obstacles the project has faced, even in recent times, these solutions should be easy to find."
