The other thing that needs to be addressed is a policy on lightning. If I understand what happened this weekend, the first aid people on duty had been given a call that a storm was approaching and when lightning was observed air horns were blown to call players off the field; however, some referees (obviously lacking in common sense) felt they had the individual right to determine whether a game was to be ended or not. I would think a policy similiar to what golf courses use would be sufficient.Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.

Agreed - but for the most part this is a first rate facility and one that is great for Mass soccer.

Does anyone have any idea the numbers of cars that can fit in the main lot? I'm just curious because someone had suggested that paving the lot and lining the parking spaces would be helpful with the spacing issues (also the washboard and pothole issues). But of course, there is the expense of doing so, so the same person suggested they charge for parking on weekends, such as this past weekend, when there is a lot of activity going on. They suggested a small fee of $1, which I wouldn't be opposed to paying if it was earmarked for such an improvement. I'm just wondering how long it would take to finance a paving project at $1 a car.Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.

Based on the rough drawings, and my one trip to Lancaster, I am going to guess that the main parking area is a little over 150,000 square feet. I base this on a rough size of 1000 feet by 150 feet (about 2 1/2 fields). The basic calculation is that you get one space per 325 sq./ft. That includes circulation areas and landscaping. So about 470 spaces. A single car should take up no more than 9 linear feet (about 3 feet between each vehicle). So FSM is correct that poor parking can diminish the actual number in an unlined lot pretty significantly. Probably by more than 10%. A full 16 field event probably will bring a maximum of over 1,500 cars. That is 18 cars per team, per field, with an over-lap of three games (coming, playing leaving). So even with a full utilization of the lot space (and the upper lot which may hold another 175 cars?) you will need off-site parking. As for cost, asphalt (3 inches) runs about $1.25 per square foot. This does not include earth moving or painting. The big question in Lancaster would be whether the lot was constructed with the necessary infastructure to handle drainage if it went from its current pervious state to an impervious condition. I doubt that it was. This would increase the costs dramatically. Even without infrastructure improvements, you are talking a pretty big nut to pave the area. What I've provided is a huge guess, but I'm sure that the construction plans, which are on-file in Lancaster, would show full parking calculations.

On SAturday, it looked like about 9-10 fields were in use in the morning. I don't believe the parking lot was full. There was talk about being shuttled to off site parking. Was this necessary?
It looked like some (?most) of the college teams came by bus which reduced the demand on parking.
